When creating a GEDCOM file, I noticed that the 2.x beta version deals with middle names differently than the old one. When creating a GEDCOM file in Genpro 1x, it looks like so:
0 @IND00002@ INDI 1 NAME Alfred E. /Neuman/
In Genopro 2b, the GEDCOM file for the same indivual looks like:
0 @ind00002@ INDI 1 NAME Alfred /Neuman/ 2 DISPLAY Alfred E. Neuman 2 GIVN Alfred 2 MIDDLE E. 2 SURN Neuman
Since the middle name is now removed from the NAME field and placed in the MIDDLE field, this present problems when importing the GEDCOM file into TNG (Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) as the middlenames get lost. It might cause problems with other software as well
Can the middle names be re-inserted back into the NAME field.
Charles...

| All my Col's and Capt's have returned to civilian life! When I export to GEDCOM using Beta 15, I am not showing Title or Suffix in the NAME. Would it be possible to get the NAME field to show: Title First Middle "Nick" Last Last2, Suffix or at least: Title First Middle Last, Suffix? Many thanks for great product. Steve

| I think that on the "NAME" entry must be the same as the "display" option..... For me "First Last Last2" (Spain) and can be as "First / Last Last2/" or "First /Last/Last2"

The NAME field in Gedcom is not clearly defined. In the past, I tried to contact the individuals who wrote the Gedcom 5.5 standard and never got a reply. Here is what Gedcom 5.5 says about the NAME field: The GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5 - Chapter 2 - Lineage-Linked Grammar
NAME_PERSONAL: = {Size=1:120} [ <TEXT> | /<TEXT>/ | <TEXT> /<TEXT>/ | /<TEXT>/ <TEXT> | <TEXT> /<TEXT>/ <TEXT> ] The surname of an individual, if known, is enclosed between two slash (/) characters. The order of the name parts should be the order that the person would, by custom of their culture, have used when giving it to a recorder. Early versions of Personal Ancestral File ® and other products did not use the trailing slash when the surname was the last element of the name. If part of name is illegible, that part is indicated by an ellipsis (...). Capitalize the name of a person or place in the conventional manner - capitalize the first letter of each part and lowercase the other letters, unless conventional usage is otherwise. For example: McMurray.
Examples : William Lee (given name only or surname not known) /Parry/ (surname only) William Lee /Parry/ William Lee /Mac Parry/ (both parts (Mac and Parry) are surname parts William /Lee/ Parry (surname imbedded in the name string) William Lee /Pa.../
As you can see, nothing is mentioned about the Title or some other field. Adding extra stuff is likely to cause trouble to other genealogy programs. In the past I received emails because GenoPro was not writing a space before the / causing their genealogy software to fail to import the Gedcom file.

| Ambiguity in specifications has always made for late nights. Would it be possible to have the format for the NAME field in the GEDCOM file determined by the Full Name selected in the Display screen for each Individual? That would give everyone a full set of options in determining what would be exported to the GEDCOM file for each individual. Alternatively, for each Export to GEDCOM session a dialog would allow the user to determine the NAME convension for ALL exported individuals. Choices would be the same as given on the above screen. Either option would give the flexibility of meeting the needs of the various other GEDCOM programs and of the various cultures served by GenoPro. My alternative is to go back and put all the titles and suffixes into the First, Middle and Last fields. This will result in a skewed listing of family names. Thanks for your time on this. Steve

GenoProSupport (11/13/2005) As you can see, nothing is mentioned about the Title or some other field. Adding extra stuff is likely to cause trouble to other genealogy programs. In the past I received emails because GenoPro was not writing a space before the / causing their genealogy software to fail to import the Gedcom file.I dont know if it answer your question but here is what I found: Tags in the GEDCOM 5.5 Standard
NPFX {NAME_PREFIX} Text which appears on a name line before the given and surname parts of a name. i.e. (Lt. Cmndr.) Joseph /Allen/ jr.
NSFX {NAME_SUFFIX} Text which appears on a name line after or behind the given and surname parts of a name. i.e. Lt. Cmndr. Joseph /Allen/ (jr.) In this example jr. is considered as the name suffix portion.

GenoPro Beta does support both tags NPFX and NSFX.

| Agree that GenoPro handles NPFX and NSFX tags. However, on export to a GEDCOM file these name-related variables are not included. In the example above, both Lt. Comdr. and Jr. would be dropped from the resulting NAME line. It appears that GenoPro uses First Middle /Last/ to generate the NAME line in the GEDCOM files. I'm hoping you can add an option to use Title First Middle /Last/ , Suffix or other user selected combination. In the exported GEDCOM file there are the following type lines: 0 GLOBAL 1 NAME 2 FULL 3 FORMAT %T %F (%N) %M %L (%L2) %S It would appear the NAME line under each individual does not follow this global example. I must be missing something. Steve | | | |
