Well, I've did a keyword search on both terms and nothing came out, so...

It looks to me that latest GenePro (and beta as well) can't handle GEDCOM files made with PAF5 using cyrillic support (UTF-8 Export) option, and displays garbage instead of characters. Even if I select Cyrillic script in font preferences, I can't get cyrillic charactes. GEDCOM files experted from PAF with UNICODE option turned on are reported to be of wrong type and are not processed at all. I'm affraid that there is a catch somewhere in GenePro load routine regarding cyrillic characters.

Note that if typed characters directly in GenePro (with cyrillic script turned on) they are displayed correctly. It just refuses to load GED files from PAF with cyrillic characters. Furthermore, it loads his GED with cyrillic characters. PAF loads GenePro's GEDs as well as all PAF's GEDs correctly. Only GenePro doesn't loads PAF's GEDs in any way...

So, what can be done in order to improve GenePro to support cyrillic characters?

Or am I doing something wrong...

Best regards to the author, program is very neat (one of the nicest chartmaker I've seen on the web) and it would help me a lot in researching my origin if it would display the names and surnames correctly.

Keep up the good work!

I wanted to reply to you with a solution to download. Well, it will take a bit more time. I have been learning ASP.NET for the new report generator of beta 13. The new Gedcom will support Unicode (and UTF-8) so you will not have the problem you are describing. When I designed the original Gedcom, I was not aware what a charset and code page was about. To my surprise, I learned that some individuals were using GenoPro to build their genealogy tree in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and more. Wow! Later I learned why those individuals were able to do so, although GenoPro 1.x was never designed for this. The problem however was when exporting/importing Gedcom and sorting. GenoPro 2.0 has bult-in Unicode, so the problem will be resolved.

Thanks for the reply!

As I've suspected, problem is somewhere in the import/export routines - load/save works fine. I'm using PAF for data storing, and am trying to research my family tree in Serbian - thus the need for some kind of cyrillic support. GenePro would help me in visualising tree structure (PAF is quite short about that), but...

Next, out of couriosity, I'm wandering is is a great deal of work to add option for changing default box to some other shape to denote gender. For example, it is very common in Serbian ethnographics literature to denote female with circle and male with triangle, names (or just personal numbers) written below (not inside) symbols.

I'm looking forward to see new version

Best regards,

C.

What can be done in order to improve GenePro to support cyrillic characters?
Russian language.

Программа не поддерживает русский язык! При составлении отчета кириллица не поддерживается. Хотя в генограмме все русские буквы отображаются корректно и правильно.

Некорректно отображается русская буква "я".

Когда будет доступен русскоязычный вариант программы?

The program Gold does not support Russian !

At compilation of the report the cyrillic is not supported.

Though in генограмме all Russian characters are displayed correctly and correctly. Russian "я" character is incorrectly displayed.

When the Russian variant of the program will be accessible?

Can you send me a sample file by email? I want to do some testing before giving you a link to download a version for you.

GenoPro Beta 12 (http://www.genopro.com/beta/) has support for Gedcom. The beta does recognize the character set UTF-8 as well as many other character sets. Can you give it a try.

PS: For those who view strange characters in their browsers, try the "Cyrillic (Windows)" encoding. Right click on the page to bring the context menu of your web browser, select the Encoding sub menu, and then select "Cyrillic (Windows)".
