I see that this subject has been touched upon before, but I still feel I have to comment on it.
The present Gedcom export is of such a quality that it is impossible to share findings with other researchers. This is a major problem, unless the target group for this program is only casual hobby researchers. Problem is - what do you do when you've started out as a hobby researcher, suddenly has 500+ (or whatever) persons in your tree and feel like you want to perhaps become a bit more serious about it? As it is right now, you have to import what can be imported into another program, and then make a whole lot of manual corrections due to the poor Gedcom export in GP. This makes it, in reality, impossible to switch to or supplement your GP use with another program.
I, for one, would like to be able to combine two programs, as I want to record not only my ancestors but also descendants of ancestors other than myself. This is of course possible in GP, but it quickly becomes messy, and the auto-arrange function is only usable up to a point. At other times, it is easier to input direct ancestors and small families into GP instead of into the non-graphic databases of other programs. But as it is now, the Gedcom export is so poor so such transfers are really impossible...
The reason why I write this is, that I accidentally stumbled upon the to-do list for the Beta before the final release of v2.0 and nowhere did I see anything about improving the Gedcom export, which, I feel, is of the utmost importance.
I appreciate that time is limited and that there are probably other tasks which must be completed as well, however, I'd appreciate at least an answer to this letter, just so I know whether to expect improved Gedcom support in the near future, or whether I have to just bite the bullet and take out a week in my calendar to import my findings manually into another program.
Sincerely yours,
Thomas

| I agree there are several issues regarding exporting to Gedcom, and many more outstanding issues importing from Gedcom. Gedcom is lowest common-denominator data format for transferring genealogy information. Is is impossible to use Gedcom to round-trip data with two genealogy application without data loss. First, the Gedcom standard is very loose and has many interpretations, from their infamous ANSEL character encoding, to the CONC and CONT tags, to the NAME tag which uses the forward slash (/) to split the first name, last name, middle name, name prefix and name suffix. The Gedcom documentation provides no meaningful examples for the NAME tag. I wrote several time to the Gedcom "support" and never got a single reply. As a result, different applications interpret the the NAME tag differently, resulting in data distortion. To "fix" their problem, the Gedcom committee came out with Gedcom 6.0 which uses XML. I was not able to find a single genealogy application supporting Gedcom XML. My guess is the Gedcom 6.0 specifications will never be used by the genealogy community. Second, there is a wide variety of genealogy applications, having GenoPro at one end of the spectrum. GenoPro is graphical application requiring additional drawing information such as the layout position (x,y) of each object. Exporting to Gedcom is fine, however other genealogy applications care little about the family tree layout. As a result, the genealogy application may not write the x,y position back into the Gedcom file, and next time you import your Gedcom file with GenoPro, you will loose your family tree layout. GenoPro uses GenoMaps and hyperlinks, a unique feature seen nowhere in other genealogy applications. Well, each hyperlink causes a lot of trouble because it creates duplicate individuals within the family tree. Other genealogy applications importing the Gedcom file are likely to create two individuals rather than linking them. See An explanation of how hyperlinked users on different genomaps are exported in Gedcom format for details about this issue. In Gedcom, a place is a text field while it is an object in GenoPro. As a result, GenoPro can store additional information to a place, such as multiple pictures and much more. Well, this data can be exported to Gedcom, however other genealogy applications are likely to miss all those places because they won't recognize the tag. The same can be said for twins, labels, bookmarks and more. Finally, there is the issue of upgrading the import module to use a new parser. You are welcome to read Gedcom compatibility with genesreunited for details on this.

Probably it may help you in the meantime from Genopro to Gedcom (but definitely you may loose information when reimporting modified data.
