My uncle has done a lot of genealogical research and has posted a number of trees on the web as html docs and excel files, e.g. at http://grir.pri.ee/family/gabovi.htm. He does NOT have GEDCOM files or a way to create them based on the Excel files.

I was wondering if there was a way to avoid retyping all the information into GENOPRO by hand. Is there a feature that allows me to import Excel files into GENOPRO, to then link them up with my own tree?

This has been raised before. The simple answer is that it is not a simple task as they way the data are structured varies so much. See http://support.genopro.com/Topic17853-60-1.aspx?Highlight=excel (Found this using the search facility of this forum)

In theory it should be possible to convert a spreadsheet to a simple gedcom if you limit it to the sort of data obtained from the IGI; ie child/parents plus details or marriage plus details. I started making a list of possible columns of a spreadsheet but got no further. As a non-professional programmer I find that I need to use a program before the incentive to develop it kicks in.

Looking at your spreadsheet I would say it would need to be re-structured before there was any chance of getting it into a genealogical version. Perhaps someone out there will know of a way to do this.

As I said on the other topic I did a lot of convertions between Excel and Gedcom.

Your file is easier and I think that the information have some kind of structure that I can create without problems the program, but the question is: How many of this files do you have?

If there is only this one I think that there is no sense to work on the convertion,

1- I need some time

2- I need to understand all the lines and how to convert it

3- There is a lot of missing information that I think you must try to find.

if you have a lot of files, then I can give you the program for convert it ....

Thanks for this feedback (and please excuse the late reply)!

I actually have about five or six trees in the same format, so an automatic program would be very useful. They are all at grir.pri.ee/family (reachable through the "clickable" ancestors). The website is down at the moment, but I assume will be up shortly.

Thanks again!

Sorry also for the late reply...

Yes, I saw your trees on the same day that I wrote my first mesage...

Can you contact with me directly??? my email is on the users profile page....

(I need to know if the structure will be always the same and how we can work on it.... there are some parts of the conversion that we can make easier....- like the poblation fields)
