I am seeking a method of displaying an non-parent relationship. For example, I know of a grandparent (or ancestor), but not a parent of an individual.
Also, it would be useful to be able to display a relationship such as a student or teacher of an individual.

Regarding the former, I also have a few such cases in which I just leave blank the name of the parent (if unknown). I think it's better to do it that way, since you don't alter the visual aspect of the tree and preserve instant recognition of the relationship.
I use <blank> for individuals whose name I don't know even if they are at the bottom tip of the branch. For example, I may know that couple X and Y had two sons and a daughter: I create the three entries specifying the gender and leave their names blank. In this way, the known information is not lost.
Concerning rdn's example, if you have information about the grandparent but not about the parent, you may create the entry for the parent, indicating (at least) whether it's paternal or maternal grandparent, or indicating that you simply don't know. Not having a piece of information IS ITSELF a piece of information. :!:
