Would it be possible to accept "." as part of the permanent ID. Would help me a great deal.

I undersand the usfuleness of the period (.) as part of the Permanent ID. The decision to exclude the period is for the new report generator. The new report generator will use the Permanent ID as part of its object model. In other words, a tag will be able to use the permanent ID as if it was a built-in tag.
@[i.ind00002.birth.date]@ - Display the date of birth of the individual "ind00002"

Once the report generator has been completed and tested to a satisfactory level, I may allow the period if it does not screw up existing scripts. I am not ruling out the use of a period, because I would like to use it myself, however until the report generator is complete, I want to keep this option available.
In the meantime, you can use the underscore (_) character instead of the period.
