I do not think this has been raised before - I searched the list and could not find anything relevant; So:-

GenoPro is a database with a 'visual' front end leading to the data input screens. It also contains linkages between individuals.

I have a colleague who has been collecting data over the last 30 years for a one-name study and has 3 trays of cards (each nearly 1metre long!). I had started a similar (smaller) study using GenoPro, putting in records from Parish Registers (baptism, date and parents) and arranging them approximately on the GenoMap according to date. In this way it is easier to see who could be related, and where they can not be.

Thinking about how to enter a large amount of tabular material, leads to the thought it would be useful to have an alternative method of data entry. As a first step, would it be possible to use the format of the Search result as a data entry form. A follow on step would be to import spreadsheet data if it was in an appropriate format - although that would involve much more checking.

There are several other studies entering data in tabular format. Some people use spreadsheets but there can be difficulties here in that most of these programs are limited in the number of records (rows) they can contain.

Looking at the columns in a search result it is obvious that several of these are derived, eg Display Name, from fields in the input screen. Others such as Id are generated internally by GenoPro. Other important and necessary fields include xPosition and yPosition. The initial 'y' value could be related to date and the 'x' value to sequence. Using v.2 it would also be useful to separate data on entry into different Maps, but that is a detail of less importance.

Two questions here.

Would this be of much use to others?

Is it possible to implement? (This question should really come first)

GenoPro 2.0 was designed to capable to import data directly from a spreadsheet, an HTML table, or a plain text delimted by commas (,) or tabs. What remains is to do it.

I think that data input from a spreadsheet would be very useful to high-end users. 8)

I have done some bulk editing of my data table by copying to a spreadsheet, making changes and then pasting back in. It appears that you must paste either one cell or one column at a time... and it must be a whole column and it doesn't work for all columns. :?

So you just need to sort (find) the data you want to change, arrange it in the table, copy either the whole table or just a column, paste it into a blank spreadsheet, edit the data... sometimes I will cut/paste to a word processor from the spreadsheet since the find/replace is more powerful... and then past the data back into the data table. Just make sure that you don't re-sort or refresh the data table in genopro or else your paste will not match up and the data is all jumbled. For that reason, it is always a good idea to make a backup copy before doing any heavy table manipulation.

I only have one question... why is it that not all columns can be pasted into? They can all be copied, but some fields appear to be read-only. :?:

Thanks,
Mark

Technically the entire spreadsheet can be pasted, however some columns are skipped. For instance, the column named "number of pictures" cannot be pasted. This is a "read-only" value, since the number of pictures is calculated from the number of pictures objects. You cannot set the number of pictures using the Paste command. Some fields have pre-defined values, such as the cause of death. When you paste values in any of these field, the pasted text must match one of the pre-defined value.

Thanks for the reply...
From what I can tell, there are quite a few columns which cannot be pasted into via the data table. I think the same data cannot be edited directly in the table cells either. You can see what kind of cell (column) it is by running the cursor over it... if the cursor displays as a plus symbol the data can be edited, if it displays as an arrow, it is read-only. Some examples of columns that you cannot edit/paste from the table are Occupation, GenoMap, Age, Border Fill Color, Label Color Top, xPosition, Baptism Source, Place of Disposition, etc. I see that these fields are mostly those that reference custom lists that get generated in the background as data is entered... and then display as pull-down menus whenever data is entered again. Mark
