I have noticed recently increasing use of PNG files where you used to see GIFs. I remember this was driven by a large company claiming copyright on the GIF standard.
The base reference here is http://www.w3.org/Graphics/PNG/ and more information is at http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/slashpng-1999.html
This latter article (dated 2000) does contain this statement "The patent issue is largely history, except to shareware and freeware authors, for whom it's still quite real--Unisys lawyers continue their apparent crusade to kill all low-cost GIF-supporting software." So it may be history now but use of PNG would avoid any possible problems. The article also states that both Netscape & IE have supported PNG since version 4 (in both cases) so it should not cause any problems - but that is what Beta testing is about.

GenoPro is already capable to generate .PNG files. The old report generator was capable to store a picture witin an RTF (Rich-Text Format) document. The preferred format to store an image within an RTF file is to convert that image (GIF, BMP) to PNG. This is what Microsoft Word does. For details, visit RTF Picture Specifications from MSDN.
Eventually I want GenoPro to be capable to include small portions of a genealogy tree within the report. I think I will go with .GIF format because GIF does support transparency. PNG does also support transparency with an alpha channel, but I have not seen applications supporting it. Internet Explorer 6.0 still does not support the alpha channel of the PNG. You can test your browser to see if it does support transparent PNGs at http://www.w3.org/Graphics/PNG/inline-alpha-table.
The Unisys patent has finally expired, so we can use GIF...

on firefox it's not a problem Thanks for the info. On Opera 7, the alpha blending (transparency) is working flawlessly, however there are far too many users using Internet Explorer to ignore this problem .
