Is there a way to move the displayed name for a person to the left or right, rather than just from the top to the bottom?
thanks!

No, but you can move the lines so that they don't cross the name.

This has been discussed in the old forum and will come up again, since there is also the request to add a picture to the individual. So the final layout is not in any beta yet and we have to keep waiting, maybe even after version 2.0 is out. Aligning the name to the right or the left (maybe some other languages than english) is one alternative, which might be possible in one future version.

mcfadden (2/23/2006) So there is no way to keep the names from crossing over lines ... ?The answer is maybe, as there are a couple of ways round it 1) Ensure the 'Link as Parent' line is positioned behind the name (right-click the line and click on Position -> Send to Back). The line will then break behind the name and not cross it - see the male link in the sample below. 2) Click on the 'Link as Parent' line, and then drag the centre position so that the line goes around the name - see the female link in the sample below.

There is another way of displaying a tree without the connecting lines overlapping the names, which mimics the way family trees are often displayed in books (see the sample below). The marriage line is made a double line by dragging the middle box, and the 'Link as Parent' lines are made invisible by making the display colour the same as the background (white).
