I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, at least this way (couldn't find by search), but...
How about a separate Picture window alongside the (main) Document window, just like there already is for Table Layout window? Function could be identical: as you select an object on the Document window, Picture window displays the primary picture for that selected object.
