my ancestors worked in an iron foundry.  Yet on searching through the trade directory for the area, foundries didn't come up.  Neither did iron works or cast iron or blast furnace workers.  I don't know exactly what they were working at.  Does anybody know what other words I can try instead of iron foundry worker?

You have not explained the period you are researching , but generally iron work was done by "Blacksmiths", in a blacksmith shop or foundry.
