Would it be possible to add a box to an individual's properties so that reports use the name for the individual specified in that box instead of always using the individual's first name?  It could usefully be set up so that the first name appeared in the box by default but could be overwritten.  In the family tree I am working on, many individuals are/were known by their second name or a nickname, not their first name.  Confusion (and sometimes strongly-expressed objection) arises when members of the family see those individuals referred to by their first name.  For example, my mother's given names were Gladys Mary.  She hated the name Gladys and never used it.  Those members of the family who access the Genepro reports generated from the data I have inputted do not like to see her referred to as Gladys but there seems to be no way to prevent this except by omitting her first name from the recorded data.

You can put their preferred name in the 'nickname' field. For example, if your mother was known as Mary, rather than Gladys, and you set the nickname to Mary, the 1st reference in the report would say Gladys, known as Mary, .....  but thereafter would refer to her as Mary.

Since the topic of displayed name is coming up, like to propose a configuration in config.xml, where we can choose between standard display and an asian display(LN&FN) with no spaces inbetween.
Just counterchecked with chinese, its the same as in Japan.

Have once used the Alternative name display but with so many updates over time, I transferred all japanese names into the proper fields and the english name into 2nd LN field, since I do not like to touch lang.vbs settings as an enduser.
This display should cover individual and family pages as well as the toc pages.

I'm still discovering new tricks I didn't know about :D

I found by accident that it is possible to edit both Full Name and Display Name within an individual's properties to anything you like; whether this is by design or not I don't know. I wanted the format "First Name Middle Names Family Name" which surprisingly isn't available if a Second Last Name has been entered - the resultant format in the Individual Table shows "custom" rather than the usual "%F ...".

As far as I know, the only place the Full Name is used is in the report. To make this clear, should the title be expanded to Full Name (for Report)?

Wow, I forgot this case.  I added the formatting template "%F %M %L" which will format "First Middle Last".  This will be in Beta 19b.

Thanks for this.  I did in fact find the nickname possibility after I had posted my original query but, while it works fine for genuine nicknames, it does not look so good when used to get around the problem I mentioned.  A Full Name of "Gladys (Mary) Mary [Surname]" just looks silly.  Can my original suggestion not be acted upon GenoPro?

Thanks for looking into this, but I need the LN&FN display only for the narrative report, not for the display in the genomap, where I use anyway the vertical display for japanese names.

Just change the name in the Full Name box - as I implied in my earlier post, this box should really be renamed to Full Name (for Report).

Just choose the format you want from the drop down boxes for both the Full Name and the Display Name - see below - the chosen Full Name will be used in the report.

Thanks again but I fear this does not work.  It does mean that she is called Mary in the heading to her section in the report but she is still called by her first name (Gladys) throughout the body of the text (and in the subheadings) and that is the problem.  Although I live in the UK, there are members of my family who are US citizens and the problem has arisen on both sides of the Atlantic.  At present, I have to show the first name as being (in the example) Mary (with no second name) and insert a note detailing the full names.  As a work-around, this works but the record is incorrect and shows up a clear fault in the software.  Not good marketing!

Are you using beta19? With the input of 'Mary Gladys Surname' and a Nickname 'Gladys' and using the standard En
