Would like to see a discussion about the use of categories, especially after the late introduction of place categories last year.

The way I see this is like a folder with subfolders and if necessary with sub-subfolders, like the following example shows:

Like in place categories, a house in itself is not a category, also not a church, so where do we place those items. Since we will have events in the future, what kind of events are there and were do we place them. This will make the narrative phrase easier to build and supports translation into other languages, rather than having a free text field.

So who can come up with a proposal for event categories?

Maru-san, you have contributed many excellent ideas to GenoPro.  Go ahead, break the ice.

This is a first idea, so everybody can shout at me without being sorry:
Events could: celebrations (anniversaries, birthdays, wedding, etc), health (accidents, illness, dental, etc), holidays (...), immigration(fleeing war zones, etc), legal conflicts (murder, stealing, etc.), mark of honors (promotions, etc), stage performances (speeches, interviews, theater, films, singing, etc), publications ( books, magazines, prints, etc), religious (open), sports (indoor[list], outdoor[list]), traveling (business, pleasure, both)
Who has more?

I think we have overlooked one category in places: an address. This is very useful in occupancy.

Sorry, I placed this in my own topic:

Currently, I use boxes around individuals and text boxes around groups to achieve this goal. However, I wonder if there is a way to supply a better way to categorize individuals based upon attributes like nationality, geography, ethnicity, etc... Right now I have to print some pages multiple times with overlays to achieve this goal. Any ideas?

If you could support some kind of attribute type object which I can assign a color or image too, this would help. It would also be nice to be able to sort on these as well.

A number of options already exist within an individual's display properties:

  • Size of gender symbol
  • Colour of gender symbol
  • Colour of gender infill
  • Colour of each quarter within the gender symbol
  • Colour of box border around the individual
  • Colour of box infill
  • Colour of top and bottom labels

This should give enough options for categorising individuals.

You can also sort on these attributes via the table layout. They are not shown by default, but can be selected by right-clicking on the column heading and selecting 'Column Properties...'.
