I'm having issues with GenoPro not saving data.  I'm trying to input a source on one individual, I close the individual record and hit save, but when I then try to pick that source in a different individual's record, it is not in the pick list.  Then if I close down the program and re-open it, the source is no longer in the first individual's file.

I've also noticed that if you try to hit CTRL-S to save while the cursor is in any pick-list field, it tends to either lose that option from the pick list, or cause an error and terminate the program.

It just feels really rather unstable and I've taken to triple checking everything after input as I'm worried about data disappearing.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

EDIT:  I returned to my file a couple of hours later, tried to re-enter the source data as described above, and everything now seems fine.  I'm puzzled!  Is there a way to repair database files that may possibly be corrupt?  I'm loath to do much more work on my database while I keep getting these apparently random errors.

GenoPro has a built-in mechanism to clean-up unused object.  For instance, if you create a source but not link it from anywhere, GenoPro will detect this source is not used and therefore delete it when saving.  This is a bug, it is by design to avoid thousand of unused records.  After analyzing hundred of family trees from our users, I noticed many of them had thousand of unused records (unions, occupations, education, places, sources) and were afraid to delete them.  The decision was taken to have GenoPro handle this task when saving.

If GenoPro deletes an object during the save operation, an Undo entry is added to the Edit menu.  Try it, press Save and take a look at the Edit menu to see if the source was deleted.

The solution is to create a source and assign it to an object such as individual, family, picture or place.

I'm not sure I understand.  Do you mean I need to create the Source from outside the individual's record, then go back into the individual and Pick it?  This seems un-necessarily cumbersome, given that we have the facility to hit CTRL-N within an individual to create a new Source.

My issue was that I was creating the new source within the individual record, exiting that record, hitting save, then when going into the next individual it appeared not to have saved the new source.

How else can I ensure that the first individual is properly linked to the new source, before I save and the program deletes it?

Many thanks for your help

Okay, send me a step-by-step scenario of the problem.

Sorry if my initial explanation wasn't clear enough.

Open individual record A, enter birth information, in Source field on birth tab hit CTRL-N for new Source, enter details of birth certificate.  Hit OK to close (and save?) source.

Finish entering other data on individual A, close individual, hit CTRL-S to save.

Go to Individual B (A's mother) to enter Contact info at birthdate of A - enter address, in Source field start typing Source name:  it isn't there.

After several abortive attempts at this I left the database alone this morning for a couple of hours, tried again and the Source appeared to have saved.  However I have just now had another look and the Source has vanished again, both from individuals A and B.

I can send you the .gno file if you think it may be an issue with my database.

Thanks

Caro Norris

Go to Individual B (A's mother) to enter Contact info at birthdate of A - enter address, in Source field start typing Source name:  it isn't there.

In the Contact tab, I can see the source being listed (just above the Send Mail button).

However I have just now had another look and the Source has vanished again, both from individuals A and B.

Can you post a screenshot of the problem?

This is what it looked like when I had entered the Source data (new source) in Individual A:

And this is Individual B after I had entered the Contact data including the Source, saved, then gone back into it:  no Source data.

The data now appears(!) to have saved ok again:

The error I was getting was that the correct source data, Sarah McMinnies Birth Certificate, wasn't always showing in either the pick list or in the relevant Source Fields.

I don't understand why this error doesn't appear to be reliably repeatable, either.
