Hi

I've evaluated GenoPro and found it very useful in our medical genetics research. The only problem I've faced so far is that I have not found the way to display enough information for individuals in GenoMap. I'd need to display simultaneously for example, name, ID, place of birth, date of birth, cause of death, and some custom tags. We would probably start to use the software in our research group (many users) if this issue could be resolved.

At the moment, GenoPro can display only one attribute in the genogram.  Displaying multiple tags simultaneously (name, date of birth, place of birth, comment) will be done with the introduction of macros.

If you really want to display a lot of information in your pedigree chart, you can run a script to edit the .gno file directly.  GenoPro uses XML, so it is possible to open the .xml file and change the display text.  Next time you open your .gno document, GenoPro will display different text.

You can also create custom tags with all the info you wish.  GenoPro can display any custom tag in the pedigree.  The following example is from a dog pedigree where GenoPro displays the dog registration number.

Can anyone give a date when the mentioned "macros" for using multiple attributes (dates, places) in the genogram are likely to become available.

At the moment, we are working on a multi-user collaboration system, allowing many individual to work on the same document at the same time.

Another feature we plan to add is a problem spotter to find common mistakes in their family trees, such as a birth of a parent prior the birth of a child, someone married before his/her birth, and so on.

Macro and Add-on have been postponed because of technical issues with the MFC framework.  We need to remove the MFC framework, and this will require writing our own framework which is quite a task.  As a result, the macros and plugins won't see the day before 2009.

However there is strong possibility that the display attribute will be customizable much sonner. One proposal is to have multiple attribute per object for instance.

Top Line 1: Phone Number
Top Line 2: Birth Date
Top Line 3: <empty>
Bottom Line 1: Full Name
Bottom Line 2: CustomTagXYZ
Bottom Line 3: Profession

could display something like this

I think this would be a very useful feature.  I found my family tree back to the 1300s on the web, and I'd like to display both the date of birth/death and the place of birth since the where and when is the interesting piece of data for me.

Thanks,

Jason

You can display the date and place of birth by using Ron's XML toolkit, which is a skin of the Report Generator. Select this skin of the Report, which will load a menu. Tick the box
'Create Custom Tag' and then choose the appropriate template for lines 1 & 2. This will write a new file with a Custom tag containing the information. You will be able to edit these tags within GenoPro and also add data here for new entries
