Hi,
I know this is confusing, but I use this program to create matrilines for primate populations, where the father is almost never known... I have a female, and I am trying to add her first child... and it keeps popping up a box for the father. There isn't one, and the baby isn't adopted. Is there a way to get a mother/child link without having the father and without using adoption? I tried using the link setting "plain" but the line is a different color, and when you try to select a move "all direct descendants" individuals linked that way don't move. Please Help!

The reason that a father box pops up is because someone else must have been involved in the creation of a child, apart from the mother. I assume that IVF is not involved.
Seriously, the easiest thing is to create the family and then remove the father.
There are other ways to get the effect you want, eg create a family (line) and then add the mother and child. The first option is easiest

Click onto the father, so he is selected, and then press delete. Poof!

I never remove the father, I just label him "Unknown" as all children must have a father in order to be conceived as "virgin birth" has yet to be proven.

A child always has a mother and a father.  If the mother is single, the father should still be in the tree.  If the father's name is unknown, leave its name blank or type "unknown".

Although for Human populations it is important that the existence of an unknown father is acknowledged, I can understand that with a large primate population recording all the unknown fathers is distracting.

As mentioned you can achieve what you want fairly simply as long as you take care in the selection process. If you create the mother and daughter and then try and connect them (via 'Link as Parent' or 'Link as Child') the Family Line and the Father appears (see first diagram). You must then click outside the diagram, and select the father only (see second diagram). Press delete and the father will disappear (see third diagram). You can then select and adjust the family and descendent lines as you wish. You can extend the tree to further generations and offspring (see last diagram).

Howard 53, your answer was exactly what I was looking for. I was having trouble figuring out that those lines could be moved around and shrunk after deleting the father. Thank you so much for your understanding of my situation and your clarification.
