I'm really impressed with how easy and clear GenoPro is to use but I've an issue. I've just imported a GEDCOM file and the occupation and residence data is mostly lost and some is in custom tags yet there are whole sections in the database for this information. Is there a way I can alter where data from an import goes to? It will take many hours to transfer this information by hand!

As you have discovered, at present GenoPro does not support importing of multiple occupations (OCCU) or residence (RESI) tags from Gedcom files. GenoPro seems to take the occupation title of the LAST OCCU tag and creates and occupation record with it. The other tags are imported as Custom Tags. But there is a catch, only the the last tag of each tag type is stored and so with mulitple OCCU tags the Custom Tags may hold inconsistent data, with subtags from different OCCU tags. Some data is also discarded, e.g. all other job titles. RESI tags are imported to Custom Tags and the same comment applies about multiple tags and inconsistency.

My own gedcom imports suffered the same problem and I raised this issue on the forum eons ago, although I can't seem to locate the post now. Dan has stated that he intends to rewrite the Gedcom import routines at a later date.

I have a background project to write a Gedcom merge utility for GenoPro XML files that will correctly import such records. And so hang on to your Gedcom file - I may get it finished in a month or so!

I am currently evaluating GenePro and found that much data re Occupation and Census is lost through importing a GEDCOM.  Looks like this issue was raised in 2007.  Any update since then?  This is a deal breaker for me as it would take a lot of data entry to manually re-enter the lost data (I have 2,800 people in my database).

Unfortunately there has been absolutely no movement from GenoPro with this very significant bug. I fully understand why it is a show stopper for many serious genealogists wanting to import their data into GenoPro.

GenoPro and only half-heartedly deals with the just the LAST OCCUpation and EDUcation tags, dumping most of the data into custom tags. GenoPro does not deal with CENSus or RESIdence tags other than moving just the LAST occurrence of each tag type to custom tags.

Even the custom tag data cannot be relied on, because with say 2 OCCU tags in the .ged with the 1st having a date and the 2nd not, the custom tags will have the date from the 1st and place from the 2nd, i.e. missing and corrupt data.  I do not understand why in this particular case the custom tags are not added to the Occupation object, rather than the Individual. I still have gedcom data that I have been unable to fully import as yet because of this bug. There are probably other users who do not realise they may have lost important data when importing, since GenoPro reports success with 0 errors even though data may be lost or corrupted in this way.

I'm am still extremely surprised that this has not been deemed a priority problem, far more important to my mind than attempting to bring in the collaboration module. It should be a given for any genealogy software to be able to FULLY import and export standard Gedcom files, or at least report exactly what it has been unable to process, and certainly should not corrupt the data that is does import.

If you want to see the extent of this issue, just try importing the 'torture test' gedcom file from http://www.geditcom.com/gedcom.html and see how many 'standard' gedcom tags are not fully processed.

I love GenoPro for what is does do, but it could be so much better, and attract more converts from other packages with a decent import feature.
