On a one-name group that I have contact with there has been recent discussion about ways that data can be shared with different people making contributions. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/STEER/2008-04/1208544454
It makes interesting reading and raises several points of general interest, particularly now that GenoPro is soon to test a collaborative version.
The only other software I was aware of that is aimed at providing collaboration is PhpGedView. I had a look at it and decided it seemed to involve installing it on my web site so decided not to proceed. I may have missed out here but as it was not a high priority there was no need to spend time on it. The further discussion on the Steer web site has produced other suggestions but nothing final has emerged. However some points of interest raised were:-
1 Many people interested in genealogy have low knowledge of computing and so need a simple method of access. Data entry into a simple program (eg word processor) could be the limit.
2 There is a wide range of data being collected, beyond records of birth, marriage & death. But there is little common format for these, let alone other information such as wills, apprentice records, settlement records... this list is almost endless.
3 Who ‘owns’ the data? Some view this as irrelevant as the information is public and is just being collected. However there is a need to make sure that such work is not used by others for commercial purposes.
4 A similar point is who can edit data. Some solutions rely on a central operator, such as that proposed (eg http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/STEER/2008-04/1208719711 )
I am sure that these points are being considered by the Gamma developers but think that comments from potential users might be helpful.
