I work as a senior developer for Northgate Public Services, we are a software development company and have many products in the public services domain.  For one of our products we have a requirement to automate the generation of a genogram based on a set of core data and we are currently trying to determine if Genopro would be helpful in this regard.  Northgate have about 40 local authorities who would then potentially be using Genopro should the outcome be successful.

We are aiming to use the Genopro library to generate a genogram dynamically, we are looking to recommend this integration into our product which is currently targeted for release at the end of March'09.  We have a large database with details about lots of people who are related to each other in different ways.  Based on the data required for a person, we are trying to build a genogram and one of the mandated requirements we are currently unable to meet is to display a dotted line around all relations living in the same house, Please find attached an example .ged file that we generated

We have used Genopro client software and have tried to analyse the .ged file that is generated by Genopro, and our understanding is that dotted lines surrounding people living together is achieved by the defining physical co-ordinates defined, but as we are dynamically generating the .ged file, we do not think this is possible.

We have attached herewith a .ged file which is generated by us, in which we have tried to use address tags to achieved this, but it currently seems to be ignoring it, could you please advise if there is a way to achieve this.

GenoPro does not process the Gedcom RESI tag on import. I recommend yopu stop using .ged files and use GenoPro XML files instead. You can then use a shared Contact record for the address of the household. The atached XML file was exported using GenoPro but could be generated by your own software. You will notice that GenoPro outputs a 'BoundaryRect' attribute for each individual. This could be used to calculate the co-ordinates of a dotted line for the household. You could use GenoPro's Report Generator to produce an SVG image of the GenoMap that could include the household indication. See the file genomap.svg in the English Narrative Report skin for a VBScript example of generating SVG. One benefit of using SVG is that the opacity of the household shading can be adjusted so that overlapping households are more visible.

Some manual re-arrangement of positions individuals in some households will be required to avoid large overlapping household shapes in some circumstances.

A simpler approach would be to use GenoPro's 'Social Relationships' to connect individuals of the same household either to the 'head' of the household or to a GenoPro 'Social Entity' representing that household. These relationships can then be displayed as dotted lines.

First I am unable to Open the xml file attached by you.

We got rely on .ged format, as this format can be utilised by other genogram softwares, which is globally recognised format for genograms.

If we had to use 'BoundaryRect' attribute we have to supply the x and y co-ordinates, which is not possible as we do generate the .ged file automatically from our software, which means we cannot specify the x and y co-ordinates. Is there any way for us to show  household members using BoundaryRect with out specifying x and y co-ordiantes and by using an household id or some sort of identifier for household members.

First I am unable to Open the xml file attached by you.

I noticed that nobody had downloaded the XML file. You must be logged into the forum before you can download attachments. Then right click, save target as etc. Use GenoPro to open the file.

We got rely on .ged format, as this format can be utilised by other genogram softwares, which is globally recognised format for genograms.

Gedcom is globally recognised for the interchange of genealogy data not genograms. genograms can be used to represent genealogy data pictorially, but can also display other data sets e.g. social, medical, emotional.

AFAIK there is no globally recognised format for interchange of genogram data. Genopro uses its own propretiary format. Furthermore, the Gedcom standard does not have anything to represent households either. If you want to use GenoPro to display genograms with household information thren use GenoPro XML fortmat. You can always export the GenoPro data to Gedcom format anyway. Horses for Courses!

GenoPro dooes not automatically generate graphics to represent households. One suggested method is to manually add a GenoPro Shape with a dotted outline as this is an affected way of representing households. If you want to do this automatically then you will need to do some programming. GenoPro has a limited auto-arrange feature to display the data (e.g. from a .ged, .gno or .xml file) as a genogram, or GenoMap in GenoPro language. It calcualates and stores the boundary rectangles after the auto-arrange. If you want to program to creation of household graphics you will need these. If however you chose to use social relationship links instead you can avoid the programming task but the house is represented differently. You you do virtually anything you want with GenoPro usingh its 'Custom Tag' feature.
