I am trying to make a spiritual genogram and cannot understand how this works.  A dialog box pops up but it will not allow me to add text or any other type of symbol or shape, such as when the person is gay, or what have you.  Please advise.

GenoPro has many options to alter the display of individual symbols and to show emotional relationships between individuals. I suggest you have a look at the on-line help files at http://www.genopro.com/help/, in particular the section on Individuals>Display and the Videos on Assigning Colors to Specific Groups, and Emotional Relationships.
