The sub-title says it all: Allows you to select one or more GenoMaps that can be imported in a new GenoGram.  By the way, it also preserves or resolves the individual hyperlinks if any.

Feel free to download from http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/
(Look in the table for the utility lines and fetch the selectgenomaps.zip file.)

The instructions are provided in the program itself, by means of four different tabs: Pre-processing, input selection, output selection and post-processing.

Note (1) - I just realized the output it generates is ANSI.  I'll try to provide a UTF-8 version this weekend.

Note (2) - The tool is written in Visual Basic (VB6) with the latest service packs installed.  It's possible Windows complains about you not having the right run-time version or DLL.  Just Google for the file(s) and follow the instructions.  You'll be fine.

Questions, remarks and suggestions can be left in the replies to this topic.

Enjoy,
Nand

Thanks Nand, very useful to extract selected GenoMaps. However, I would find a utility that allows the selected GenoMaps to be merged even more useful.

I'm finding a couple of bugs:
1. Some 'parent' and 'child' links are being lost - appears to occur on some (but not all) individuals that were originally hyperlinked to unselected GenoMaps
2. An extra unselected GenoMap is being extracted to the new file, but it does not include any data - not particularly serious as it's easily deleted.

Also, if the exported file is not in ANSI format, then an error occurs. I assume the UTF-8 version will allow Unicode export.

About the merging of GenoMaps

Is this the same issue as the one discussed by Robert in note http://support.genopro.com/FindPost24438.aspx ?

About the bugs (remark 1. and 2.)

Could you send me - or post here - a "boiled down" version of your GenoGram that triggers the errors so that I can test this in more detail?  Hyperlinks are indeed somewhat tricky.  The empty GenoMap can be due to an unhandled entity (like a shape or a label).

About Unicode

Strange.  I never had an error when opening an ANSI GEDCOM file.  I'll work on the Unicode version in the coming days.  Visual Basic (VB6) only knows about ANSI and Unicode though, no UTF-8.  I'm not sure what the differences are and I need to look this up first.   In the meanwhile you can use Notepad to open the file and save it as UTF-8 if needed.

Regards,
Nand

In a way - I was looking for a quick way to merge two GenoMaps rather than two GenoPro files, which I understand Robert was after.

You can try it on the Harry Potter .gno file. Export to .ged, run your utility, select the Potter and Weasley GenoMaps, and generate the new GED file. When you open this file in GenoPro there is an extra GenMap - Hogwarts - which, as you suggest, may be due to the labels on that GenoMap. However, on the Weasley GenoMap, two links are missing as shown below (green arrows):

I think you misunderstood - I had no trouble with the ANSI GEDCOM file. I got the error if I exported in Unicode, as recommended by GenoPro.

Regards, Howard.

Version 1.1 is available.  It now also filters out unreferenced EmotionalRelationships, SocialEntities and SocialRelationships.  This is what triggered the problems mentioned earlier.

The kit can be found at the same location as mentioned in the base note:
http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/

My main concern right now is the support for UTF-8 encoded files.  VB only knows about ANSI and (16 bit) Unicode.  There is no native UTF-8 support.  I guess I'll have to do some Win32 API programming.

Version 1.2 is available.  It offers support for both ANSI and UTF-8 encoding.

You can grab it from http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/

Congatulations Nand, v1.2 is working OK except that I still get an extra (apparently empty) GenoMap extracted. As I said previously, this is no problem as I can just delete it.

Great work. Regards, Howard.

Version 1.3 is available.  It now correctly displays the GenoMap names on the list to select from (in previous versions it always displayed the names as ANSI/ASCII which rendered some of them unreadable).

You can grab it from http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/

FPS SelectGenomaps Version 1.4 is now available

You will find it at http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/ where you can select it from the list of utilities.

I made following changes:
- Modified the assistance and progress texts to indicate that the input file is still being scanned.
- Disabled the [Generate new file] command and the select GenoMap feature until input file is fully processed.  This is necessary when processing big files which take a long time to scan.
- Added support for GEDCOM concatenation directives which are also used for long lists of references.
- Replaced the check mark symbol by a simple "X" character to allow processing on Japanese PCs.
- Added processing of Bookmarks.
- Added an extra check on character encoding by validating the file header block to fix missing BOM values.
- Fixed a bug where part of an element block was erased and not processed.
- Fixed a bug where references to pictures, places and alike were not processed.

Special thanks go to Maru-san for providing me a huge test file that allowed me to sort things out.
