Due to security issues I had password protected my Genopro Family Tree, using password protection with Genopro, it sort of works. The problem is even after password protection, if you do a Google search, you can still see dates of birth and names, for living relatives, in the search results.

When you select the link in Google, it does request a password, but the names and DOB are already visable in the search. The other issue is, if the search result has a SVG link it is not protected with a password, and you can open it. This indicates that “svg” files are not password protected.

So I deleted by family tree and did a Google search.  Some search’s still show up so, I requested Google to remove all URL, related to this site, but still see some?

I has already submitted this link and when I try to resubmit, I get the following”Webmaster has already blocked the page” see below.

Before I republish the family Tree, I am trying to understand what my options are to secure the family tree as I have living individuals, with private info, from search engines etc.

My understanding is, there can only be a single "/robots.txt" on a site, so is Genopro considered a site and everyone publishing a family tree a user, or are they also considered a single user so we can add a “robots.txt” file in our root directory?

User-agent: *    # applies to all robots

Disallow: /      # disallow indexing of all pages

will this work?

Or do users need to add a”META element”? If so, which file do I need to add the following to:

<META name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

It would be great if Genopro has a tab for security options, with most requested security settings, for passwords, Robot.txt, Meta Tag etc options.

Your password will also do the SAME as using a robots.txt... your publication will be removed from Google and other search engines within a few weeks.

Search engines have huge databases and cannot update every web pages on the Internet everyday.  I can assure you if you put a password on your publication, the pages will be out of Google... probably before the end of the year.

Adding a meta noindex could be done, but everyone can still view your tree... just not indexed by search engines.
You are welcome to customize your report skin and add the meta on each page template, however this will not remove pages instantaneously.

I believe the big problem here is that users publish their tree and THEN decide to password protect it. As this user has found, this is often too late.

Ideally what is required it that the password can be set at the time of creation of the publication, i.e. perhaps GenoPro could prompt the user for password protection when generating a report that is published to familytrees.

My advice to users at present is to publish a dummy report to the required familytrees folder, e.g. create an extra genomap with one dummy individual on it and publish only that genomap. Then add the password via your GenoPro account panel. Then delete the dummy genomap and publish your full tree to the existing password protected folder.

I always thought that if you published a report and password protected it immediately there was little chance of it escaping. It is unlikely that a search engine robot will alight on it in that short time.
Am I being optimistic?

Your absolutely right Ron about that, the password protection should be set as the report is publish... not in a web interface somewhere hidden. That service, as well as the backups, have been created very fast because of the demand but not fully integrated into GenoPro but we will sure check it out soon.
