Whilst opening up one of my family trees recently, I was advised that I needed to upgrade to version 2.5.3.9 - my original version was 1.92.0.0 - GenoPro - Picture Your Family tree! purchased November 2006 and working on WindowsXP.
After upgrading, none of my trees would open. The following message was received:
"Unable to read from storage 'C:\Documents and settings\Owner\My documents\GenoPro\family tree.gno'
The storage header is invalid.
GenoPro cannot continue because the data format is unknown"
After clicking 'OK', the following message appeared:
"Unable to open file 'C:\Documents and settings\Owner\My documents\GenoPro\family tree.gno'"
Would not want to start from scratch - the current tree has over 500 names on it!

Please send me your .gno file (support at genopro dot com) and I will upgrade your file to the latest file format.

I am using GenoPro 2.5.3.9 and was able to open all 3 .gno files you sent me without any error or warning message. Are you sure you are using GenoPro 2.5.3.9? Can you verify the version number in the About dialog from the Help menu?

Thank you for your message - I followed your instructions and succeeded in downloading version 2.5.3.9 which I thought I had done previously - obviously not because when I checked on the GenoPro icons they were still v1.92 and v1.99. The new version has indeed opened my files, however, and please excuse my naivity, I am a 63 year old newbie and do not want to loose any data!, but:
I now have a green v.2.5.3.9 GenoPro desktop icon which opens my family trees.
I also have a black v. 1.92 (or v 1.99) desktop icon which does not open my trees.
I therefore deleted (to recycle bin) the 1.92 /1.99 version GenoPro and InstallGenoPro files, but the trees would not open.
When I re-installed the two deleted files and upgraded them as instructed, the trees came back.
Should I now just delete all the v.1.92 and 1.99 icons and family trees and merely rely on my v.2.5.3.9 desktop icon to access my family trees?

Yes, you can delete all the v1x installations of GenoPro. In fact, you may use the Windows Control Panel to uninstall GenoPro v1.92 and v1.99, or go to the folder C:\Program Files\ and delete old versions of GenoPro. Uninstalling GenoPro does not delete in any way your family trees; it only deletes the program files it installed.
The reason you were unable to open your files you double-clicked on the black icons (GenoPro v1.99) is because Windows remembers which is the last program you used to open a family tree. Therefore if you use GenoPro v1.99 to open your family tree, and later click on a family tree document (.gno file), then Windows will attempt to use GenoPro v1.99 to open it. Likewise, if you use GenoPro 2011 to open your family tree, then subsequents file openings will use GenoPro 2011. GenoPro 2011 can do almost everything (and a lot more) that GenoPro v1.99 was doing. The only thing removed is the RTF report generator which was replaced by a powerful HTML report generator and also capable to generate Word Documents.

Hello, I am currently using the GenoPro 2.5.4.1 and am trying to open a .gno that I constructed before January 2010, however the following message appears: Opening file 'C:\Users\Alex Bojinov\Documents\?????????? ?????.gno'... Reading file 'C:\Users\Alex Bojinov\Documents\?????????? ?????.gno'... Unable to read file 'C:\Users\Alex Bojinov\Documents\?????????? ?????.gno'. File not found. The file cannot be found in the specified folder Is there a possibility to upgrade the file to the latest version so it can be used? Kind Regards

I do not think is a problem of upgrade. Simply, the file ?????????? ?????.gno is not in 'C:\Users\Alex Bojinov\Documents\'. "File not found. The file can not be found in the specified folder" Find the file ?????????? ?????.gno and double-click on. I tried to open old files in 2007 and 2008, with version 2.5.4.1 with no problems.

If the problem is that files are lost - and location of files can be a problem if you are using a newer version of Windows, then use the File Find from the menu, or Ctrl+Shift+F. This will search your PC for any gno files
