Click on the line to open Family Properties menu and then open the Relation list (click the arrow at the side of the box)
This will open a list of relationships with different patterns. Select one you like. You could also chenge the colour in the box next to relationships

Normally the style of the family line is determined by the type of relationship. 'Love affair' for example produces a broken line.

Alternatively you can use the 'New Horizontal line' tool to overlay a broken WHITE line over the top of the family line. Use position in the line's context menu to 'Bring to Front'
