I created and saved a gno file back in june 2004. I don't remember the program I used. I found it today on a backup cd. I downloaded and installed GenoPro. But when trying to import I get the message that it is in an unknown format. Does this mean I lost the tree that I created? Is there anything I can do?

I think there has been a GNO format change since early versions of GenoPro, which may be causing your problem.


You could try downloading an earlier version of GenoPro, and installing it into a different folder location.
You can find the earlier versions of GenoPro here; http://www.genopro.com/archives/

If you want to have multiple / different versions of GenoPro installed on your PC, you can achieve this by installing each different  version into a different folder

(I have separate installed folders for GenoPro 2.0.1.6;  2.5.3.8;   2.5.4.1;  and 3 different versions of GenoPro 3.0.0.x, and use the earlier versions when I need to).

GenoPro .gno files can be examined by making a copy and renaming it as a zip file. You can then unzip it and look at it in a text editor. The version of the program is listed near the start of the file and this can be found using the link in the previous post.
Normally GenoPro recognizes an older file and gives suggestion on how to open it. It is possible that your old file has been damaged but if most of it is there it can probably be (mostly) rescued.

Aloha!

I am having similar trouble with attempting to open GenoPro files from 10+ years ago. I know that I used a student license from my professor Dr. Sarah Kahn at San Diego State University in the 2007-2008 school year. I also remember using Parallels to run Windows on my MacBook specifically to use GenoPro. 

These old files end in the extension .001 (see screenshot) and are not able to be opened on my Windows computer running Windows 7 with the current version of GenoPro installed. I have attempted to save them as .zip files to then open them in Text Edit on my Mac to see if there is anything in them. There is a bunch of computer code that I don't understand, as well as some readable genealogical data, so I am hopeful that I can recover their content in GenoPro.

Do I need to try installing an older version of GP? Any other suggestions?
