how can I add a child and not add the other parent?

when I click on a persons name and try to add a child, the program always creates an additional parent.

I'm not interested in the other parent. If a family member is a single parent, Id like to reflect that.

The program knows that a child has to have two parents, even if the father lived in a test tube.
Just delete the unwanted icon and rearrange the vertical lines.
It is possible to create the lines directly but would be a more complicated process.

An alternate option might be to make the second parent's icon display color white.
