I exclusively use Personal Ancestral File (PAF) to build my genealogy. All my documents (birth certificates, marriages, deaths) are in the PAF database. With Genopro I created a Genomap, a beautiful graphic representation of my tree.Problem: to update this representation, I import a new gedcom file generated by PAF but this upsets my Genomap. How should I go about not breaking everything!

If I modify only in Genopro, the import in PAF is bad, with errors in the interpretation of the fields.

Suggestions ?
Regards,
Paul

So a couple of suggestions as requested.

  1. Do not use GenoPro's built-in process to import your PAF gedcom file.  It hasn't changed in years and does a poor job, skipping some data, possibly corrupting other data and dumping other data into its Custom Tags.  I have written a replacement import procedure.  This can be accessed by selecting Tools/ Generate Report then then selecting and running my {EN} App Launcher 'report'.  In the resulting dialogue click on the GedCom Import button.

It will be slow compared to GenoPro's built-in import as it uses javascript but it produces a .gno file contain most of your data including picture links. You can then open with GenoPro and (auto?) arrange the GenoMap as required. My Gedcom Import does not attempt any layout as GenoPro is much better at this. Smile

  2. Do not use GenoPro's built-in File/ Export / Export to Gedcom format. It does not, as you have observed, produce a standard Gedcom 5.5 format file, instead it is a GenoPro specific version designed to retain all GenoPro data and is of little use for any else.  Instead again there is a Report option, so use Tools/Generate Report / {EN} Export to Gedcom.
Taking this approach should allow you to use GenoPro as your main repository of your family history, and use the Report Generator Gedcom export to move data back to PAF for say additional reports.

Thank you so much for this very clear information and suggestion !
I'll continue to complete my family history within PAF and, once a year may be, import my gedcom file into genopro using your import procedure building a new Genomap. I understand that it's not possible to merge an old Gedcom file and a new one in order to update my Genomap without doing a mess.

Paul

This is not quite true.  I have written an experimental 'GenoPro Updater' that updates a GenoPro file with updated Gedcom data.  You will first need to import your Gedcom data with my importer as referenced earlier. You can launch the GenoPro Updater at https://familytrees.genopro.com/Apps/GenoUpdate/ and instructions are given on the opening page. Please read carefully and ensure you have a copyof your orginal .gno is case things do not work as expected Crying

hello,
I intend to update GenoPro with my last PAF database.
I just tried to generate a GenoPro Report as described in your post from 19_02_2021
Tools/ Generate Report then then selecting and running my {EN} App Launcher 'report'
I can select AppLauncher as skin but without the word 'report' and  nothing appears on the following screeen, neither buttons nor text.
I'm running GenoPro 3.1.0.1, last version.
What am'i doing wrong ?
Thanks,

Yes there is a problem with the App Launcher at present, so while I try and sort this out you can access my Gedcom importer directly at https://familytrees.genopro.com/Apps/Ged2Gno.  See also http://support.genopro.com/Topic39183.aspx

p.s. trying to run launcher.js directly will fail in the way you observe as it can only be run via GenoPro Report Generator. It is not a normal javascript format file but a GenoPro report skin template format.
