1/ Does anyone know how to change the allocated ID number from the one the program gave, to the one I want it to be?
2/ And what am I doing wrong, when all my "trees" seem to give "ID No 1" to the person least important to the tree? (example: on my latest tree, "No 1" is the fiancee of my cousin's youngest child instead of the person 3 generations back, who is relevant to everyone I will give a copy to). I assume I am doing something really stupid for this to happen every time.

The ID is assigned by the program and can not be changed. If it could be altered it would really mess up all other sort of relationships.
You can tell which things can be changed by looking at the columns in the table (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-F). Move the cursor over a column and if it can be changed the Cursor shows as a normal arrow. Over the ID - and some other columns the arrow is replaced by a cross, which means it can not be edited.
The number does not have significance of priority, reflects the order things are created

The "Permanent ID" is a mechanism to link data between GenoPro and a third party database. This permanent ID can also be used as an "hyperlink reference" when generating a report. Those IDs are assigned automatically as new objects are added. There is no priority in the assignment of permanent IDs.
The Permanent ID can be changed without affecting anything in the genealogy tree. Internally, GenoPro uses another ID, so the Permanent ID is a field like the first name, middle name, last name or a comment. The only difference about the Permanent ID from the other fields is that GenoPro will display a warning message if its value is already assigned. This warning message is to guarantee the uniqueness of each Permanent ID.
To Change Multiple IDs At the moment, there is no special tool to do this. You can use the Table Layout and change each permanent ID manually, however if you have a lot of individuals, this will take some time. Here is another solution:Save your work in case you do not like the end result. At the moment, the Undo will record each modified cell in the Table Layout, so if you anticipate to rename 1000 IDs, you will have to do 1000 Undos to reverse what you did. It is easier to save, and reload the file if you do a mistake. Eventually, the Undo will be capable to group bulk cell editing in the Table Layout. Use the Table Layout to sort the individuals (or families, pictures, ...) to the ordering you would like to have the IDs re-assigned. Select the first cell in the column "ID", and use the command "Erase Column" from the context menu by to erase all the previous IDs. This is important, because if you re-use the same IDs, you will get warnings about duplicate IDs. Use a spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel, and generate all the IDs in one column. Copy that column to the clipboard, and paste it into the column named "ID" in GenoPro. If all the IDs you pasted are Unique, then you should have no problem.

Many thanks for answering so swiftly. I'll try to work through your advice to get my trees changed (I use GenoPro in conjunction with another program, having exported it to get other types of reports. Unfortunately every report seems to get the last person added as number one, confusing everyone.) I think, that although it seems a time consuming task to go through, it is probably quicker than redoing the trees (the biggest one is now a good many feet in both height and length.
By the way - why did the program choose as No 1 an individual which was added months later thatn the others? Has it got something to do with which person happened to be "highlighted" when one first clicks the report-button??? I.e. at what point is an ID actually created?

What version(s) of GenoPro are using? Going back from the Beta to the old GenoPro 1.91b is not good to preserve the IDs. If you need to generate reports, please wait a bit more.

| How do I restart the IOD count from the highest number? I apparently changed the ID of a picture, and now every time I add a picture, I have to manually assign it a number. I found in post ID number edit a method for deleting the IDs and restarting the count. The problem with such a solution is that all of the IDs are apparently reset. This is not useful for my purposes, as I use the IDs of the pictures for the graphical representation of each person in the SVG view of the tree. Is there any way to tell GenoPro to simply restart the count from the highest number +1?

rdn (4/29/2008) Is there any way to tell GenoPro to simply restart the count from the highest number +1?By default GenoPro always assign a new ID by incrementing the largest previous ID. GenoPro maintains a count of the largest ID for each type of object (individuals, family, pictures, occupations), so it knows which ID is next when a new object does not have an ID. To restart the count, click on the column ID which will sort from the smallest ID to the largest ID. Then find the "largest" ID you want to keep, right click and select Erase Column. GenoPro will delete all the IDs larger than the one you selected. Next time you save, GenoPro will re-generate those IDs, adding the value of 1 for each new ID.
