convert FTW to GEDCOM

I used to work with FTM (Family Tree Maker) a couple of years ago, but after some computerchanges i do not have the program anymore.  I would like to restart the pedigree, but i only have a FTW and FBK-file with all my dates.  I tried to work with the Family Archive Viewer, but apparently that program does not work anymore on XP.

Is there anyone who could convert one of these files to a gedcom, or specify a freeware that can do this job for me ?

Thanks in advance

I can convert the file for you!

Send it by email!

Anyone who could convert it as a gedcom and email me the ged-file to edwin( at )vinken.be .

Thanks in advance

I know this is an old thread, but I'm in hopes that someone around might still be able to help me out. My laptop, back-up drives, and family-tree maker software were all stolen from car earlier this month. I ended up losing two months of research, but thankfully I had saved an .ftw file in my e-mail. I'm reordering Family Tree Maker, but they've proven very unreliable in their delivery and order processing. I am still without my software and without a useable Gedcom. I was unable to attach the file, but would be glad to e-mail it if anyone can help. Thanks a bunch!

You can email me your file and I will be happy to convert it to GEDCOM.

I hope that your ftw file is OK... Wink

I recently found a copy of our family tree file in FTW format that my aunt sent me to add to. I installed my old version of Family Tree Maker ver. 3.02 and it says my aunt's FTW file was made with a newer version of Family Tree Maker.

Would you be willing to convert yet another FTW file to GEDCOM format please? I'd love to be able to recover some of the work she did on this file.

I have the same problem as others who have posted to this thread. I will mail the offending .FTM file to you, in hopes that you will be able to convert it to GED or PAF and return it to me. This is apparently a necessary and useful service you are providing. Is there a trick to it that others could use, or is it dependent on special tools you have unique access to?

A Starter Edition of Family Tree Maker 2005 is available at http://www.familytreemaker.com/download/starter.aspx. This installs as a full version for 14 days and then reverts to the Starter Edition which has no time limit. The full version will export to GEDCOM, but whether this is available after the trial period, I don't yet know (I can update the situation at the end of the 14 day trial).

If you are willing to try (another) Beta program then look at http://beta.familytreemaker.com/ for next year's program - 2008

Another way of converting FTW files has become possible with the announcement that Family Tree Legends v.5 from http://www.familytreelegends.com/ is now available as a free download. Follow the link on the site and 'Buy' the software. This leads you to a a page where you are given a registration key which will activate the program.

You can import the FTW file format directly. The program claims it can import a wide variety of other formats, including GenoPro, but in fact this has to be done after you export to Gedcom.

However it does have native FTW support and I have imported a file and then created a gedcom file from it.

One word of warning. When I started to use the program, the first thing that I did was to try to import the FTW file and the PC seemed to hang when I browsed to the file. This was possibly a conflict with my virus detector as it seemed to be checking a lot of files. On my second attempt I created a blank file and loaded some dummy data. This initially created a database and after that I had no problem importing the FTW file

Hello,

I just joined this website in hopes of finding help.

Our family tree has an AQ file extension......I cannot open it....Sad

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is?  I saw a website for ancestry quest...is that what it is?

do I have to buy this software to be able to view this data? Any advise would be helpful...thank you!

Robin

By fbukolyi - Thursday, August 23, 2007
Ancestral Quest data file. See http://filext.com/file-extension/aq
By appleshaw - Thursday, August 23, 2007
If your family tree has an AQ extension someone must have created it. Ask them to export the tree as a gedcom, which has the extension .ged. Any genealogical program can then import it and view the data. If you do not have any programs yourself you can obtain a test version of GenoPro, which will allow you to look at the file and work on it for a short time.

If you then decide that you do not wish to change the data any more then GenoPro will carry on as a viewer of your family tree. If, like most of us on this forum, you get interested in extending your family tree, you can upgrade and purchase a full copy. There are other programs available but you would need to see for yourself which you prefer

One thing I can promise is that FTM 2008 is a major disappointment. I am stuck with a 9-generation .ftw file with over 190 people that I can't use. My genealogy mentor suggested Legacy, but I'm open to ideas. First I've got to figure out how to convert the .ftw to gedcom!

For anyone who hasn't tried the new FTW: it sporadically crashes when saving new sources, and now it crashes when I'm trying to export as gedcom (of course!).

If I can't get this file converted can someone help? And anyone feel free to suggest another program to use. Thank you in advance.BigGrin:
By GenoProSupport - Wednesday, October 24, 2007
Using FTM, you can export to Gedcom.  Then, open your Gedcom file using GenoPro.
By kc7brown - Wednesday, October 24, 2007
That's the whole problem with FTM. When I try to export or save as a gedcom the program encounters an unexpected error and has to close. So it crashes before it saves. Do you think an earlier (non-beta) version of FTM will work? I'm willing to try anything, but on an older non-critical backup first of course!
By kc7brown - Wednesday, October 24, 2007
Can someone please tell me how to convert my tree to gedcom? If it is because I have linked media I'll unlink it. I have no problem emailing the ftm/fbk file to anyone who can help.

Have a try with Family Tree Legends. It says, that can import directly ftw files and have export to gedcom capabilities as well. Free to download Smile

Hi,

I'm writing in hopes that you will be able to assist me with converting a FTW to GEDCOM file. Back in February of this year I switched from the PC to a Mac and now I can't use the program I am used to (Family Tree Maker). I don't want to start from scratch so if I could have my file converted, it would save me a ton of time. Is this something that you would be willing to undertake for me? If so, please let me know and I'll e-mail it as an attachment to you.

Thank you.

Do you know how to convert FTW files into GEDCOM files? I have FTW files from a prior Windows computer. Now I have the data and need to convert for use with another MAC application.

Any help that you can provide will be hugely appreciated!

FTW are files created bt Family Tree Maker. If you know someone who has the software and he can convert the file for you.

If not - you can send me the file and I will be glad to convert it for you.

By jeffger - Sunday, June 22, 2008
You can do this without any software.  The easiest way is to create an Ancestry.com account then login and create a new tree by uploading the FTW file.  Now you can download the new tree as a GEDCOM file.  Ancestry.com already knows how to take a number of tree formats for upload as you can imagine would be to their advantage to do.
By appleshaw - Tuesday, June 24, 2008
If you load a tree, possibly with sensitive data including living people, can you delete it from Ancestry? If not you may prefer to use the other methods mentioned on this forum

Hi,

This may also be relevant to other people:

Another possibility is to download the "Family Tree Maker 2005 Starter Edition",
This program (seems to be 14 day trial of full version); and does open your FTW file,
It has option to export as GEDCOM file, which I have done for you..

I hope that the attached GEDCOM has not lost any data in the conversion.

How can I send you my FTW file to convert
It is not one of the accepted file types
By Martyn - Thursday, December 30, 2010
Please consider the privacy / confidentiality of information in your tree, before you release to open forum

The 100% private way is for you to convert to GEDCOM yourself, with a program such as;
"Family Tree Legends" which you can download from  http://www.familytreelegends.com/downloads
or
"Family Tree Maker Starter Edition 2005"  which you can download from  http://past.familytreemaker.com/download/starter.aspx

I am not sure what are the limitations on "Family Tree Legends",
I know that "Family Tree Maker Starter Edition 2005" is a 14 day trial version, and may not work on most recent versions of FTW files

I have checked both programs this morning, and they sucessfully converted  the short FTW file mentioned a few posts before in this topic. (23rd July 2009)

Or, if you do not want to install programs on your computer; and depending on the size, (and version/age )  of your FTW file; you could send to me by email attachment, and I will try to convert for you.
(Click on "EMAIL" button, at bottom left side of this post, and then use the "Attach Files" option)
If is a very large file, it may be better to compress with something like "Winzip" or "Winrar" before you attach.

I am UK based for time zone, so is morning for me..

Hi, Can you help me convert my ftw files to Gedcom?
By Martyn - Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Hi,  Firstly, welcome to the forum.

It depends on the source of the files, and which version of FTM was used to create them.

If you received the files from a friend, it's always worth asking them if they still have FTM installed, and if they can use FTM's option to export to GEDCOM, and send the GEDCOM versions to you.

If this is not possible, and the files were created with FTM before 2008 version; I will try to convert for you.

For your privacy, it's best if you could send to me by email, rather than attach files in open forum.
Just click on my "EMAIL" box to the left of this posting, and then attach the files;
(if you have many files you want converting, just send a few for me to try at first)

The email will be routed to me via the forum; so for your privacy, it does not reveal your actual email address.

Unfortunately, the Starter Version of Family Tree Maker has been taken offline. Maybe there were too many who wanted to convert data. I already have several Genealogy program and don't want to buy another one. I have a FTW file from my father who uses a German version of Family Tree Maker, but I don't know which version. In any case, it does not have an export or conversion function. I don't know why, but I checked myself.

So, the question is - Is there somebody willing to convert this FTW file for me? I would be most grateful.
By appleshaw - Sunday, April 10, 2011
Family Tree Legends is still available at no cost and converts some FTW files - possibly not later versions. Look at

AncestorSync (http://ancestorsync.com) and/or FamilyInsight (http://ohanasoftware.com) will soon support FTM 16 for reading and can convert to any of the popular genealogy formats. We're just finishing up integration now. Come February we'll have something solid for you I wager.

Hello,

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 Linux, and have just installed the Windows program "Family Tree Maker 2005 Starter Edition" under "Wine"

The "Starter Edition" will run for 14 days, and then drops back to the basic version.

I do not know what version of FTM your file was created with, so not sure if "Family Tree Maker 2005 Starter Edition" will open it.
If it does open it, you should be able to save the tree as a Gedcom file.

If you have your original "Family Tree Maker" installation files, it may be possible for you to install it in Linux under "Wine", and use the full licensed features of that version.

If you do not want to try installing FTM (any version) under "Wine", you could email me  your FTW file to me (via my email link in the forum), and I will try to convert it for you.

If you do email to me, please post a short reply on this forum, saying that you have emailed me, so that I can look out for your email.  (as the forum email does not always arrive)
Please remember that I only have 14 days before the starter edition expires for me.

For your information, it is probably est not to post your FTW file directly to the forum for tree privacy reasons.

I normally use GenoPro (a Windows program) on Ubuntu under "Wine" for my Genealogy program, although I can dual-boot back to Windows 10 and run it there if I need to.

All the best, Martyn,
By Martyn - Sunday, March 26, 2017
I have only got 3 days remaining out of the 14 day free trial, if you would like me to try to convert the FTW file to GEDCOM.

You may want to read this article. Not sure if any of the links at the bottom will work for you:

By appleshaw - Thursday, July 6, 2017
The report mentions that RootsMagic can import FamilyTree Maker files. I have the free version, V.7, which does contain an import option for files from 'Family Tree Maker (2006 and earlier)' so this may provide a valid Gedcom. Not having any such files I can not test it.
In fact I have found some ftw files and imported them to RootsMagic, created a gedcom which opens in GenoPro.
According to the site RootsMagic runs on a Mac

Hello all,

Im here for similar reasons as others. My father created a family tree in family tree maker but passed away in 2010 soI don't have access to family tree maker software...and am on a mac so cant download the free trial. I luckily found the FTW file in an old email but haven't been able to open it. I am on Ancestry and have a paid subscription but was not able to upload the FTW file. I also tried Roots Magic but it gave an error when trying to open the file there. Im really hoping there is not an issue with the file as it is the only copy.

Anybody able to help with converting the file to Gedcom or have any suggestions?

I tried to attached the file here but cant even do that as says the file type is unsupported Sad

Much appreciated!!

I have just installed a 14 day trial of FTW2005, so could try if it will convert the file to a GEDCOM file if you could attach or send it.

I think that GenoPro will only accept a few file types as attachments. (not including FTW or FBK)

I suggest that you first make a copy of the FTW file (to prevent possible corruption of the original file), and then try either compressing the copy to a zip file, or just re-naming the copy to have a txt extension, and see if you can either attach to a GenoPro post, or send it as an email attachment to my GenopPro email link.

I will try to help you if I can,
