I am interested in finding GIS software that is : 1) easy to use. Like to come up speed quickly 2) allow me to use maps of new york city 3) allow me to differentitate user by document (such as various census, naturalization,draft documents,phone books, etc) 4) is free or close to it Any suggestions?

I heard QGIS is a free tool. Not sure how easy it is to use. Some use it with CartoDB. I'd be interested to see what you create with it.

I am experimenting further with Google Maps APIs for the main GenoProX report to extend mapping of genealogy data. So far I have implemented heatmaps for births, deaths or all events. A date slider is used to subset the data to a particular period in time. My intention is to also add 'tracking lines' to show geographic movements e.g. migrations using KML Layers.
