Name translation

As I understand, you are working on translation of the program to other languages.

I would like to ask (if possible)to think about the issue of the "name translation".

In my report, I had to write until now  on the same field the same name in English and and in Hebrew.

i.e - "Dan דן"

I would like to keep working on only one Database

Is it possible to think of a mechanism to convert those fields into separate languages

For example, maybe it is possible that the user will make "master list" for names, like :

Dan דן = Dan (EN),  דן (HE).

Levi לוי = Levi (EN), לוי (HE).

Linda לינדה = Linda (EN), לינדה (HE).

The user will still have the ability to maintain only one database , but if he will choose to generate a report in english, the program would know how the convert the "source" name field, into its english version (i.e - Dan דן = Dan (EN) ) . if the user will choose to generate a report in Hebrew, the name filed will be converted into its Hebrew version (i.e - Dan דן = דן (HE)  )

I hope I could explain what I mean since my english is not so good Smile

As it happens, way back in the distant history of GenoPro, well nearly two years ago, Dan introduced the concept of a Name Dictionary to do exactly the job you describe. By coincidence, I have been working with the NameDictionary for other purposes to be introduced in 2.0.0.5, that is to derive possive and 'locative' cases of nouns that are exceptions to the rules.

I am planning to add name translation to the Narrative Report soon, possibly in 2.0.0.6. This will work as you describe. I would also like to add the capability to add, in say an English Report, name alternatives in other languages e.g. Hebrew.

Yet another use will be the ability to group similar surnames under a common name in the Name & Family Index pages.

I have attached the sample NameDictionary for 2.0.0.5. Details of the Report Generator interfaces can be found here http://www.genopro.com/sdk/Class/NameDictionary/

I have a meeting next week with a genealogist having 25 years of experience about the same issue, this time about the graphical interface.  Our meeting will be about translating arabic names.  Once I fully understand the requirements, I can design an interface that works for all languages.

Is there any solution for this issue?

I have been dealing with this nominal half-translation method for about 26 years.
For example, generally speaking, researchers of Ashkenazic Jewish info, need at least 4-5 parallel languages for any person:

TODAY(English+Hebrew) -> Arameic -> additional European -> Yiddish -> LOCAL(French/German/Polish/Romanian/Russian/etc.)

I do use such a list even today, which is always being updated.

FOR EXAMPLE:

HEB(Avraham אברהם)=NICKHEB(Avi אבי)=YID(Avrum אברם)=ROM(Avram)=ENG(Abraham)=ARB(Ibrahim)

HEB(Alexander אלכסנדר)=NICKHEB(Alex אלכס)=YID(Sender סענדר)=ROM(Alexandru,Sandu)=ENG(Alexander)=RUS(Alexei,Sasha,Shura)
