Is there a way to have a 3-digit year displayed without a leading '0'? The system doesn't allow me to put in a 3-digit year, I have to input a '0' before the year.

This is by design: all years have 4 digits. The date parser recognize years by four consecutive digits.
Wow, you must have done quite some intensive research to go back to 1000 AD.

You do not have to type the leading zero; the system will add it. I agree that it does not look attractive and is not the way you would write a date. It does have advantages for sloppy typists like me, in that it draws attention to a missed digit when entering dates. You can get round this on the display by entering the dates into a Custom Tag and displaying that on screen. The xml tool kit could be used to add existing dates to a tag but it would either have to be re-run to add data or the tag edited directly. The tool kit could probably modified to strip leading zeros
