When I tried to upgrade to GenoPro 2020 (from 2016), I got this message: You cannot upgrade from this version of GenoPro. What's up?

Moving from GenoPro2016 to GenoPro 2020 is not a chargeable upgrade, but an update. The key you purchased with GenoPro 2016 is good for GenoPro 2020 too. Just download and apply key if required, but GenoPro will do this anyway if GenoPro 2016 is already installed.
