Hello Everyone.

I have quite a few word documents and a few PDF files I would like to insert into my trees somehow.

For example I have a 19 page document which is a dated list of all the references to the Duggleby name prior to 1600. It is proving difficult to attribute most of the references to individuals so I wondered if I could insert the file so it could be opened and read by anyone viewing the family tree?

Alternatively without having to try to attribute each reference as a source to an individual could I insert a link to a folder where all of these files and references are on a blank tree?

thank you

I suggest you create a GenoMap specifically for this documentation and then create dummy individuals on this genomap to represent the documents. Set the hyperlink for these 'individuals' to be 'External Hyperlink' and set the hyperlink value to be the local path of the file.
I recommend that you save all your Word documents as PDFs as these are more accessible on the web.  You can for example add comments to the 'individuals' summarising the document contents. You can remove gender symbols from the display and set the name to the name to the title of each document.

If you click on these links in GenoPro it will open the document. When you generate a Narrative Report the files will be copied to the report folder and will be opened in the browser when clicked on.

Hello

thank you so much for the quick reply.

Having counted them up there are about 1800 references which I would need to create dummy individuals for.

I can easily convert all the files to PDF but is there no way to add a link to a FOLDER please?

then the user could see a list of all the files (PDF format) in that folder and open whatever they want?

thank you

I was thinking of a dummy individual per document, not per reference. The genomap would be essentially be the same as a folder with a link to each document.

You could be creative, colour code them, group into boxes using labels etc.

Or do you have 1800 separate documents w00t

Hello

Yes I have about 1800 documents. Each reference has a text file and most have photograhs of the originals as well and that is why when I thought about it would be easiest to put all of these files in

"MYFILES" folder which I read about on this forum and create a link to that folder where you could see all of the files in that folder and open which ever ones you wanted to.

thank you

Hello

I am combining as many of the documents & photos as I can into as few PDF docs as possible.

I will then do as you suggest and make "Dummy individuals" but call them the name of the PDF file and attach the pdf as a source.

thank you again for your invaluable help.

Yes I assumed you would name the same as the files. But still think it is better to link to the document via an 'External Hyperlink'
Only one click is then required to open the document whereas linking via a source requires 3 clicks I think. Rolleyes

Hi

I tried making a dummy individual and making an external hyperlink to it but when I publish the geno it does not add it into the source list which is where I wanted it to be.

So I did this:

Made a text label and added the sources into that and these do show up on the sources list on the website.

Happy with it all now.

thank you again
