V.L.o (3/9/2007)
just a little suggestion! You make so nice customized reports... Wouldn't it be nice to have them all sorted under one topic/thread or placed on common download page... with descriptions etc. I agree in principle with this suggestion. Perhaps Dan & Jean-Claude can be persuaded to create a sub-forum of the Report Generator section dedicated to custom skins. The main problem I see with customised skins is one of maintenance as many of you have found when trying to translate to other languages. Whilst I am happy to suggest ways of customising a skin and even sometimes produce the code for it I would not want the job of maintaining all these variations. Therefore each custom skin needs an owner (or owners) prepared to undertake the maintenance task. The task is not too onerous for a single skin as all that is required is to compare a new original release with the previous one (e.g. using WinMerge) and then applying the same changes to the customised version. Sample reports from each skin could be published by the owner into their own http://familytrees.genopro.com area, linked from the forum thread. This avoids the problems of shared update access to download areas.

Personally I don't think there is an issue with using IDs to uniquely identify a person. You can set a value for new individuals under the Family tab, or change existing values, and once set GenoPro doesn't change them without user action (e.g. erasing the ID column!). They are obviously useful when matching between different software packages and are imported from Gedcom files. The only area to watch out for would be clashing values when importing a Gedcom file. I don't know what GenoPro does in this situation.

Thank you all for the help and advice particulalry re the fact that ID is not neccesarily permanent. perhaps I need to take a bit of time and rethink this.I have to say this is the best support forum I use - and i too would like to see a directory of skins. thanks again Elly
Thank you

Hi, great support, thanks very much, really appreciated. This seems to do exactly what I wanted...
Do check that the id is the best way to create the reference that you want. It is only created when you save a file. To demonstrate this:-
Open you file Create a new person Look in the Table - No id yet! Only created when you save a file
This might not be a problem; however if you start exchanging a file with other people who make their own edits - out of sequence - there might be problems. I don't know, but it would need checking.
If you go ahead using ids then it might be an idea to tidy them up before you start. In my large file, which has evolved through various versions of GenoPro, the sequence of ids is complex and messy. A set that came from a gedcom import do not even start with idxxx. If that is the case then you could erase the id column and start again. If you sort the columns before saving (to create new ids) that might also be helpful
I still think a Custom Tag is a better solution. The only disadvantage is that it will not be created automatically when a new individual is added

Thanks V.L.O. I have been advocvating this for some time now.I believe a Genopro directory could be allocated for this purpose alone, with a separate Forum Index for sample Reports and Skins. The skin could be uploaded in ZIP format, and a small sample file of the skin could be displayed.

Hi elly, I've looked into your request and is was straightforward to modify the Narrative report to produce what you requested. Just use the attached three template files in place of the original files in a customized report skin. The SVG solution is a compromise but will work OK providing you do not use 'tiny' or 'extra large' sizes for Individuals (gender icons).

You might need to think whether the GenoPro ID is what you need in the report. Unlike a standard database, the ID is not absolutely fixed to an individual. To demonstrate this, try the following.
1 Open the file and then the table; make sure the column showing ID is visible
2 Right click the heading and select the menu item 'Erase Column'. (You've got a backup - haven't you?)
3 Not to worry because you now have to 'Save As' eg idTest
4 You now have a different set of IDs
My thought is that it would be better to create a Custom Tag for this. Ron's XML toolkit will probably give you what you want; this is accessed from the Report Generator as a skin

helloThank you. I have managed to pull off a reference document from the table and found this really useful but would like to do more. I would still like to add the id to every occurance of a persons name in all of the pages. so will as you say, await with anticipation the return of Ron. ellen
Thank you
