The family "Permanent ID" is for identifying the object, such as an individual, family, picture, and so on.  Many people use the Permanent ID to link with an external database.  GenoPro will not delete or change the Permanent ID.  If the Permanent ID is empty, then GenoPro will assign a unique one just before saving to disk.  If you want to assign different numbers, you are welcome to use the Table Layout (Ctrl+T) and paste the Permanent IDs you wish.  Use a spreadsheet program such as Excel to generate your IDs and paste them into GenoPro.  GenoPro will be happy to accept your new IDs as long as they are all unique - otherwise GenoPro will ask you to confirm which one of the duplicate you want to keep.  There is no limit on the length of the Permanent ID, so you can use other things such as an email address, a file name or a GUID.

At the moment, the custom tags are plain-text only.  Eventually we would like to support data types, such as lists, dates, multi-line text, and an URL where the user would click on it and GenoPro would launch a web browser.  You can use the Sources / Citations to attach multiple URLs to an individual or family.  Each source / citation has a field to enter an URL.

By the way, if you give us a bit more details about your research project, we might be able to give you a few tips using GenoPro.  We are also open to suggestions to improve our product.

I'm looking for a new program for our research department and I've been trialing GenePro. It's already 1000 times better than the program we use for our pedigrees! I have 2 questions though. BigGrin:

It's quite important that we are able to identify family members by a family number. What's the best way to assign this number? Under family there is a "Permanent ID" box. Is this meant to be a family identifier?

With the custom tabs I'd like to link to an external website. Is there a way to make the URLs in the custom tags active? When I add a URL, I can't find how to make it a hyperlink.
