I have imported a gedcom file produced using PAF 5.0 The family tree now displayed is very complicated and over lapping.

How do I separate branches of the family but retain the links

If your Gedcom file is large, consider importing a fragment of the Gedcom file using the Import Dialog (Menu -> File -> Import File). This will greatly reduce the overlapping.

To remove overlapping in an existing file, please read the conversation Better AutoArrange.

I had a large Gedcom import which, as it contained several families, I split on to different GenoMaps. I selected a starting point from the table (Ctrl-T) and as the data had birth information clicked on that column to sort and find the oldest person. If you do not have birth data then you can use Baptismal dates but remember that PAF treats these differently and calls them Christening. If you entered the data yourself as Baptism then there is no problem. If the dates are recorded as Christenings then you need the conversion utility from Ron, available at

Having chosen an ancestor by selecting it in the table, it is also selected in the display. Move the cusor here, so that a cross appears next to the arrow and bring up the menu with a right click. Move down to Select and the sub menu appears. Move down to 'Direct Descendents' and the family is selected. Do not use the alternative of 'Descendent Tree', as this usually selects all of the display if you are starting with an early ancestor.

At this point it is worth adding the spouse of descendents. Put the arrow over the selection, so that a cross is also showing and the repeat the Select process but choose 'Mate'.

Finally Move to another GenoMap. Place cursor over selection; right click and choose 'Move To GenoMap'. Having moved part of the tree the AutoArrange has less to work on, although you will probably still have to do a bit of manual tweaking.

The point of Move To GenoMap is that all relationships are preserved and if any parts are left behind, such as siblings or parents of the spouse, they are still linked and can be traced
