it turns out this guy is a dick
he has the entire faimly tree in gedcom format but he wont give it up he wants me to use his website.
frankly i think hes being stuck up. i mean whats the diffrence if i use his website and manualy enter info by hand of if i just download the entire kitten kobotal ( sp)
i offered him my ( small by comparison) family tree in return but he said no way
the gedcom file was "60mb - 100mb"

If you really want to find out about gedcom then the present standard (5.5) is at
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gctoc.htm
There are later standards being discussed but this is the one normally used. Can not say I have read it and it probably does not mention limits. Any limits are probably system related, such as absolute size of a file or maximum number that can be calculated. However in practice there should be no problem.
Your original contact was probably put off by the fact that a text based file is bound to be much larger than a system file, such as GenoPro produces

There is no limit to Gedcom file. GenoPro can import as long as you have enough memory.
To import from Gedcom, you need roughly 4 KB per individual, so if you have 2 GB of memory, you can import a Gedcom file having 500,000 individuals.
For instance, GenoPro imported a gedcom file containing 64000 individuals (32 MB .ged file) and required a peak of 236 MB of RAM.

thats not quite what i was hinting at
i mean is there a limit to the number of individuals that can be stored in a gedcom file?
example an excel spread sheet can noly have like 65k rows
is there a limitation to gedcom

I downloaded a large .ged file which was 32,000 Kb. as it is a text file you could zip it to reduce size. Imported into GenoPro, without AutoArrange it is 6,000 Kb
As ged files are text it could be zipped

i thought that gedcom's could be massive but i asked some guy for a copy of his and he said that he didnt keep it on gedcom becuase it was "to big"
does this sound right to anyone?
