I really like the contact information tool, but have run into a dilemma and would like some advice.

I am using the hierarchical place feature:
ie, Country -> Province/State -> City -> Hospital/Church/School/Cemetary/etc

For home addresses, I was just using the City and putting the actual address in the comments field, and the phone numbers in the right spots.  When I generated the report with Contacts Hidden, none of the information showed, but it was getting harder and harder to pick the addresses from the Pick list as the contact list grew.

So I tried adding "Houses" at the same level as Schools, etc. and plugged in the actual address in the Place Details dialog screen.  I would label each House as the "Smith Residence", etc.  Now, when I generated the report with Contacts Hidden, none of the information showed with the individual, but under Places it would list exactly where the house was and you could zoom in on it with google maps.

I can understand that some of my relatives would be very nervous about having this information broadcast, especially if they have small kids or shady characters in the family.

Is there a way I can plug in all the contact info, but hide it, and not have the Houses/Schools appear in the Contacts list?  I don't mind if Cemetaries and Churches show.

Can someone right a custom report for this? or is there a radio button I can select to hide it?  or should i just wait until the update in 2008?

Your best approach is customizing the report skin, mostly in Init.htm, to mark which places to exclude from your report.

As you mentioned, the solution is in the privacy filter, yet to be developed.  At the moment, we are working on a collaboration module which will take months of development time.

The privacy filter is an important feature to GenoPro.  I spend two solid months writing a privacy filter in GenoPro Beta to recognize this design was too complicated and was not working the way I wanted it to work.  My brother and I spent several hours drafting different architectures of data/privacy filtering and we concluded the need for a complete re-write of the privacy filter module.  We also plan to include a Privacy Wizard for the user to create different Privacy Templates.  We want to do a good job on this because the privacy filtering will be used for many purposes, such as exporting to XML, export to Gedcom, export to metafile (EMF), and or course, generating a report.

I believe I have at least a partial solution to this dilemma. I have have attached a revised Narrative Report skin. This will exclude any Place that either has no references to it or whose only reference is its parent place. Thus if your 'house' places are only referenced from occupancy records and you exclude Contact details from your report, this will exclude the 'House' places. Their parent places will still be included. If 'school' places are only referenced from occupancy records then they too will be excluded, but if they are referred to in Education records they will still be present. I suggest you use only education institution fields and not education places if this is a concern.

I also think there is an omission in GenoPro's occupant type list. Surely as 'work place' is already included as an occupancy type then 'education place' should also be included.

Thank you for the quick replies.  I hope to download the customized report and play with it later on this week, and will give you feedback at that time.

I have a somewhat related question.  I thought I would be saving myself time if I went through and added all the US states, all the Canadian provinces and all the Greek prefectures to the Places database so that I could just pick and choose them as the time came.

I would pick one person, and then add a bunch of states under the "contacts" tab, and I would see them in the Places table.  Then, assuming the places were stored there, I would delete the entries from Contacts, and add a bunch more states.  I was very frustrated when I discovered that most of the states I had originally entered had disappeared when I deleted the entries from the Contacts tab.

Is there a way around this?  I'd like to be able to sit down and add a bunch of Places, and then be able to just pull them up as the need arose.  Is there some method I am not aware of?
