Hi. My problem is that I have many people appearing on two genomaps. As such when I publish the web site I get two of the same people in my pick list of people. Someone gave me an answer to this and suggested I only copy the links to the second genomap and I thought this would be a good idea. However, after trying, looking up help for some time I have had not managed to work out how to do this easily. There are hyerlinks but they are too tedious for the purpose. As one of my genomaps already will not autoformat without making a mess it is essential I break up the work into smaller bit. Please help me.

Please look at http://familytrees.genopro.com/jonathon@distantworld.com/

Also, I was publishing to my own site and therefore had my own Google API. Now I can't get my site at Genpro not to complain about Google's API.The google API implementation is a bit nasty. How do I stop my google complain when I have blanked out the api and I din't know the code to enter.

Thanks anyone.

There are duplicate people is because you have the same individual twice. You should consider deleting the double instance and use internal hyperlink that made the same individual appear twice (or multiple times) in the same document.

Each Google Map API key is specifc for a website - this is a requirement by Google and we have no control over that (Google did not ask our advice on this :WhistlingSmile.  Just use the API key provided by GenoPro, it is built-in to the report and you won't have to worry about it.  This is why we are offering free hosting at http://familytrees.genopro.com - to reduce the problems of hosting genealogy reports with all the challenges, from firewall issues to MIME types hosting and API keys.

This link does not work.  If you want http://familytrees.genopro.com/jonathon, feel free to change your username from 409215 to jonathon.

Initially I thought Genpro was a great product but now I am beginning to find it more than a challenge. I have added 100's of people but I a definitelty struggling.

1. I want to show my direct relatives on one diagram and all the others on another.

(a) I can't just select the direct ancestors of my youngest son and add it to another diagram using internal links. It is far more complex than that.

(b) The layout on my main diagram has now become stupid and Genpro lays people over each other.

(c) If three people lived at a certain address it is tedious to add this information.

(d) Genpro sometimes loses my edits!!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Re your standard answer on Google API

(e)   I KNOW that each web site has a different google API code. Two things tho'

It is really unclear where to put your own code - in the config file, at the time of publishing or in a custom tag. When you take it out it is not clear when you have successfully removed it.

So I have removed the code from the config, when publishing and out of my custom tags (all documented in this forum). When I publish to Web genpro I get an error. What is the right web site code for Genpro where can I get it. Why is this so trick?

(f) I have stopped using my own site because I had issues with the genomap viewer and genpro recommended it.

(g) Went through a stage where the product starting painting red with ftp issues. Ah hour later no problem....

BUT THE WORSE PROBLE IS... now I cannot seem to tell Genpro people are married to each other - who their parents are.

Basically the product (in the end has proved to be very flaky and I am now going to look for something that may be better).

Any help appreciated... or a refund?

Lot of points here. First are you using the latest version 2.0.1.4? The main problems you note are unusual and could be due to causes outside GenoPro. Lost edits are not a feature of this forum and if they were common there would be many people shouting.

I suspect that one of your problems is that you have too many people on your main screen. A general recommendation is to keep it to less than 200, although I often have several times that. However if you have a large set then the auto-arrange is not able to cope; there are too many possible options. Manual rearrangement is the answer.

Can not see where the problem of marriages can occur. If you move the two people near to each other on the screen, select one then either Ctrl-M or right click for menu should allow a linkage. The only problem I have found with a large display is that when you try to add a second spouse it can be difficult to find as it appears a long way away. If this happens it is better to create the spouse and then make the link.

Finally, for now, I also liked the idea of a tree diagram showing the ancestry of my children. I extracted this from my original and pasted into a new file. The only problem here is that the 'Select Direct Ancestors' only works on the visible display and so you have to add any ancestors who appear on other GenoMaps. I would also say that the list approaching 200 people needed manual arrangement and prints over 3 sheets.

A general comment. Any program dealing with complex problems, and families have a wide range of problems, can not be understood immediately. GenoPro tries to make things easy for the beginner - which you have obviously gone beyond - but if you have complicated relationships they need a bit of lateral thinking to make obvious for other viewers. I can only say that the alternatives offer a different way of dealing with these problems but have their own limitations.

1. I want to show my direct relatives on one diagram and all the others on another.

(a) I can't just select the direct ancestors of my youngest son and add it to another diagram using internal links. It is far more complex than that.

GenoPro has a toolbar button to select the ancestors.  Just click your son, then on the toolbar button Select Direct Ancestors () and copy & paste the family tree to another document.

(b) The layout on my main diagram has now become stupid and Genpro lays people over each other.

The AutoArrange has limitations.  You have to do your family tree by manually positioning the individuals with the mouse.  It is not so hard, as you add new people, you click and drag the mouse to place the individuals where you want them to appear in the layout.

(c) If three people lived at a certain address it is tedious to add this information.

You can re-use the same address.  Click on the button Pick to select an existing address.  GenoPro also supports hierarchical places (a place within a place), so you can define a city, and then just type street addresses, or more detailed contact information at that address.

(d) Genpro sometimes loses my edits!!!!!

Please tell me how to reproduce it and I will investigate it.

First, getting good support and the fact the product is (in my opinion) advanced in features that I need I am going to carry on with Genpro.

Second, the answer to select someone then click an icon to select ancestors and then copy to a new no problem i can do that. I want to copy "links" not create new objects. Maybe this type of thing could be considered in the next release.

You didnt say how to get over my Google, API problem.

I noted today after a restart some of the buggy things stopped - as a matter of interest.

I wish the program religiously stuck to windows conventions - like control click to add to select.

No chance of creating a slight simpler name for the url to our web sites?

Thanks for the help.

Google api =

ABQIAAAASJ0G4SOiaQ8eyk3nzNi7YhS8Sug1lBz5d9mEGdwPgwjMebPy9xQoQLPIM-CcpjAnaGoBwGuJrnArCQ

As stated, it appears as the default in the English Narrative Report

To setup an easier address, use your original web site and setup your 'index page' there as a redirection page to Genopro. The address used by Genopro is fairly simple, only an amalgamation of your user name and the folder you nominate, both of which are changeable by you, the user.

Stick with it Jonathon, hyperlinking to separate Genomaps is the best answer to all your other problems, and once done will make navigation of your database much simpler.

This cannot be achieved in a single .gno file. Hyperlinks are limited to individuals not families and parent or child pedigree links should occur only once in the file. So if you were to create internal hyperlinks for each direct ancestor you could not show the pedigree links on the linked genomap.

A solution is perhaps to use a master - slave approach. Maintain data in your full tree and then after each major update, select your son's direct ancestors and copy and paste into a separate .gno file. Then when you produce reports etc. they do not interfere with each other. You can of course add 'external' hyperlinks to individuals pointing from your master .gno to a slave .gno and vice versa.

GenoPro has a toolbar button to select the ancestors.  Just click your son, then on the toolbar button Select Direct Ancestors () and copy & paste the family tree to another document.
