I'm doing this for a psychology study, and I need my family member's birth and death dates on the genogram. However, it won't display unless I put the entire birthday (i.e. 1982). For birth and death dates I don't have, I still need to display something. How would I be able to display birth and death dates such as 18??-194?

Thanks!

When you enter an invalid date, GenoPro displays the background text in pink.  Since the dates are displayed according to the selected calendar (see http://www.genopro.com/faq/how-do-i-change-the-date-format.aspx), all invalid dates are not displayed.  Internally GenoPro uses a a "Date Object" which is unable to perform any calculations on invalid dates.  Special code need to be written passthrough invalid dates as text within the date object.

To display more text, you can create a Text Label (http://www.genopro.com/help/label/) and type the text you want.

The disadvantage of a text label is that it is not attached to the person, so does not move with it if you re-arrange the genogram

An alternative approach is to use a custom tag. The easiest way to get started is to put your data '18??-194?' into the baptism date and then use the XML toolkit, which is part of the Report Generator as a skin.

Follow the instructions ie select the box Create Custom Tag (default is called DisplayTopLabel - but you can change this) and then select a line to use the baptism date. This will create an .xml file which you can load and use Display to use the custom tag. Initially it will be
'bpt.18??-194?'
You can either edit this to remove the bpt, or better edit the skin to remove this prefix.

To add further entries they can either be entered directly into the custom tag, or if in the baptism date you will need to re-run the toolkit

You can also use approximate dates in GenoPro, so for a birth 18?? enter <1900 and for a death 194? enter >1939 or ~1945, resulting in a display of <1900 - >1939 or <1900 - ~1945 both of which are just about as informative as 18?? - 194?
