I am using the "Export to GEDCOM via the Report Generator" feature. The file generated does not appear to have any data regarding godfather, godmother or witness type information in it.

Is this a known problem or am I overlooking something?

Not exactly a 'known problem', more of a lack of a particular feature? BigGrin:

The problem here is that the Gedcom standard does not have tags for godparents and witnesses and therefore the question is how to convert such items into Gedcom format.

One solution that has been used elsewhere is to include the information in a NOTE tag. This seems to be the only sensible route. I want to avoid any non-standard tags as there are so many of them and are usually exclusive to a particular package. Please feel free to offer any alternative approach. I suggest a separate NOTE for each entry e.g.

1 BAPM
2 DATE 29 APR 1951
2 NOTE [Godfather:Mr A N Other]
2 NOTE [Godmother:Mrs Y E T Another]

I'll put together an interim version to implement this soon but perhaps it is time I revisited the Gedcom export.  I would like to add the same Configuration Parameters interface as the Narrative & Descendants Reports. I can also utilize the Gedcom ASSO(ciation) tag to include emotional relationships and also social relationships between individuals. Social Entities and their relationships cannot be included as there is no way to represent a Social Entity.

Thanks for that, Ron. I thought that might be the case but was concerned I may have been overlooking something.

I have actually done what you suggested and placed them in a "Note" but a solution along the lines of the Narrative report would be ideal.

Ron, I am currently evaluating a product called The Complete Genealogy Reporter in order to print a family book for a very old relative. Further to the above, I queried them as to how others handle the godparent problem. Their response was:

The GEDCOM ASSO tag provides for associations, perhaps GenPro does not export this. The tag can be for any association - this is described as the RELA tag:
1.ASSO @I1234@
2 TYPE INDI
2 RELA Godparent
We have many users who use ASSO tags a lot.

It looks similar to what you were thinking about.

Not knowing anything about GEDCOM, would it take much time to implement this?

Thanks for that information and the 'nudge' - I did start to work on this but then got sidetracked as usual!

What I propose is to implement ASSO in the Gedcom Export for social and emotional relationships between individuals. This will include the 'godparent' relationship. I will need to add 'Subject and Object forms in the Dictionary for SocialConnection enumerations for use in the RELA tag. e.g.

<Godparent T="Godparent of" S="godparent" O="godchild" />

The existing godmother/godfather text fields will be implemented as NOTE as previously suggested. Therefore it would probably be better to convert these to relationships. To avoid cluttering the GenoMap the line can be set to transparent, meaning all maintenance would be via the Table Layout for Social Relationships.

No promises but hopefully I can get this working over the next week.

p.s. can't see where TYPE INDI is defined in Gedcom with ASSO tag ?

Hi Bob,

Having burnt a bit of midnight oil (well almost) I now have something ready (see attached). This also fixes an ongoing issue with hyperlinks and a problem when children order is set manually.

Only tested with the ubiquitous Harry Potter but loads OK into TCGR and only complains about http located pictures. I noted that TCGR translates Unicode back to ANSI which could be a problem for some.

I probably need to review Relationship texts - suggestions welcome for all.

Thank you for that, Ron. I will give it a try.

I did have problems with ANSI and their 2008 version as it couldn't handle Eastern European characters. Initially, they asked me to resave in UTF-8. However, their 2009 beta now handles this ok.

As I mentioned before, I am using the Genealogy Reporter so I can produce a "book" as a present for an old relative. I much prefer your Narrative Report for its functionality, presentation and the high level of individual customisation which is possible. However, for the purpose of producing a single hard-cover book for a non-technical person, TCGR is quite good.

Your prompt response is much appreciated.

Bob.

I have added a small tweak to allow 'custom' relationships/associations. Use custom tag 'Relation' for a symmetrical two-way relationship (e.g. cousin) and Relation.Subject and Relation.Object for an asymmetric one (e.g. Aunt & Niece).

Also added processing of 'NarrativeStyle' custom tag in Narrative Report to allowing reporting of these relationships. This tag provides the suffix for the PhSR_xxx phrase used. Thus a custom tag value of Cousin on a relationship with no 'Connection' value will expect to find a phrase PhSR_Cousin in either Dictionary.xml or as a GenoPro 'Document' custom tag. (I'm working on some revised documentation to illustrate customization options)

I tried TCGR 2009 Beta and was very impressed, but a bewildering choice of options w00t

I think it is a case of 'horses for courses' with Genealogy products, each has its strengths and weaknesses. Being able to move the data around via Gedcom means you can pick and choose according to the task in hand.

Ron, just letting you know that I finally had the chance to try your changes (we have had no power in my part of Melbourne for two days with temperatures of 43C plus for three days!). They worked great on my file and you even included marriage witnesses not just godparents.

You are a marvel!

Bob.
