I'm collecting emigration data from people in a community association, and I would like to be able to display the date of Emigration in the timeline as another circle/marker, similar to the baptism/burial markers. It would be nice to see when people from a particular family emigrated. Is there an easy/elegant way to do this? Right now, I'm collecting the Emigration dates in a Custom Tag field. One work around I thought of was plugging the date in the Baptism field, and then labelling it as "Other" .. not sure if that's possible, but it's not exactly an ideal solution. Is there a 'nice' way to do this? Thanks!

When I first read this post I thought that perhaps that the occupancy fields of the Contact recorrd could be used for this in conjuction with the custom tag NarrativeStyle, but when I tested it it didn't quite cut the mustard. So I ended up applying a few tweaks to the latest Narrative Report to improve things. There are two ways to record emigration. - Create a Social Entity to represent a group of emigrants and add 'Contact/occupancy' data to that entity to document the migration, and make each emigrant a member of thast group using a Social Relationship.
- Add 'Contactsoccupancy' data to each emigrant directly. Note that you can share Contacts between individuals by using GenoPro's 'pick' button when adding a Contact.
The attached .gno file illustrates both methods give a report such as or
Note only Occupany data from Social Entities are shown on the GenoMap Timeline. This is to avoid overloading it with too many events. Examine the attached .gno to see how the NarrativeStyle custom tag is used to achieve the above.

Some time ago Genopro had introduced a version, which included fields for immigration records. So may be the next public version or another one thereafter may have these fields. By then what has been done by Ron now may be obsolete again and needs to be re-done. I think we should be patient, although some kind of pressure may help to get the next version on the market.

maru-san (2/28/2009) By then what has been done by Ron now may be obsolete again and needs to be re-done. I think we should be patient, although some kind of pressure may help to get the next version on the market. In essence this amendment effectively extends the existing Contact Type enumeration to include Migration, Relocation, Voyage & Journey values but by use of the NarrativeStyle custom tag instead. This therefore would be very straightforward for GenoPro to incorporate into the product and reasonably easy for users to migrate to. There have been other requests for extension of such lists recently e.g. place categories. It was once suggested that these enumeration lists were held output GenoPro and made user-amendable. Unfortunately it is impossible to predict how and when GenoPro will develop. The only published date for the release of the 'next' version, i.e. GenoPro Gamma, in March 2008 is now a year overdue. Some users do not want to wait indefinitely. What kind of pressure can we apply? If the collaboration feature of GenoPro gamma is proving difficult to implement then perhaps an interim release of enhancements without collaboration is needed.

Ron (3/2/2009) [quote] If the collaboration feature of GenoPro gamma is proving difficult to implement then perhaps an interim release of enhancements without collaboration is needed. Since GenoPro is a software for the genealogy community, I think priority should be given to include fields, which are essential to a persons/family`s life, such as migration data, events(i.e. broken bones), religion and may be a few more(if possible in line with Gedcom compatible fields). In parallel GenoPro can work on the collaboration features. We would like to enter data once and not transfer the same data again and again from one field to another after several months or years. We are all growing older and to remember those persons where this transfer needs to be done gets more and more difficult, since your tree is growing.(In my case over 22,000) Others may have their own opinion.

I agree completely with Ron and maru-san. The focus should always be on the pure genealogy aspects of GenoPro and the inclusion of fields which have been on the waiting list for a long time should be given priority. While collaboration is no doubt important to some and it would make GenoPro one of the most advanced products on the market, this should not be at the expense of what many would consider "essentials".
Personally, while recognising it as an important product development and no doubt essential to some, I will not have much use for it. I do need to input some of the fields mentioned by maru-san and others requested since the last release which I am presently storing in comments or pieces of paper.
I urge the developers to rethink their implementation schedule if possible.

Ron,Thank you for your reply. I'll download the .gno file and try it out your solution in a few days hopefully. One quick question ... when I generate the report, I hide all the contact info. Will this make your solution moot or does contact info for Social Entities escape the filter? Thanks, Nick
