Male #1 marries, divorces, remarries; his 2nd wife brings a child into the marriage from her first marriage. That child is effectively raised by male #1, but male #1 is not the father. How do I indicate this in the tree?

First, you create the first family of Male 1 and Wife 1 (with the divorce symbol).  Then, create a family with Father and Wife 2, with a child and the the divorce symbol.  Then, select Male 1 and Wife2 and press F to create a third family.

Right-click to the Child and select the menu item "Link as Child" to link him to the third family you created.  Right-click on the vertical link and select "Adopted Child" which will draw vertical pedigree the line in blue. You may select the other pedigree line (in black) and bend it and make it a bit smaller to show emphasis on the adoption and the small presence of the biological father in the child's life.

But the child was never formally adopted (don't ask.) But was raised by Male #1.

The diagram shows the effective position ie Male 1 has 'adopted' the child in practice but not in a legal way. This slightly unusual position can be annotated in the comment of the Pedigree Link. You could also alter the colour of the link to indicate a different situation. Finally you could add a text box near the link to display extra information. The only disadvantage of a text box is that is not attached to the Link and so any changes of the display mean the box has to be moved separately

Yet another alternative is to use a 'lives with' Social Relationship. A special edition of GenoPro also has 'household' objects to show groups of individuals in the same haousehold within a shape.
