My question is: how do I add an umlaut to the "u" in someone's name? (I'm using a *Mac* keyboard.)

Each character has a code number. For u (umlaut) I use the short cut key Alt + 0252, for a (umlaut) I use Alt + 0228. The numbers are entered on the numeric key pad.

Find out the numbers on your PC using the character map under system tools.

What would be the equivalent action to take on a Mac keyboard?
(I'm on a Mac, even though I'm running GenoPro in Windows 7 via Parallels Desktop.)

If you do a search on the internet you will find a bunch of hints.
Here is one which I think should help:

For everything there is a learning process!

Thanks again -- but no go.

I know how to make an umlaut within the Mac system, using a Mac keyboard -- I just type option+u.

The challenge seems to be using a Mac keyboard with Windows-based software, such as Genopro. Neither the Mac shortcut nor the Windows shortcut appears to work.

Here is the solution:

This presumes that you know how the German keyboard is laid out.

You need to turn on keyboard switching to allow the simple makeover of your keyboard into a standard German keyboard (and back again!).

System Prefs >> Language & Text >> Input Sources >> check "Keyboard & Character Viewer" and check "German".
If you use Spotlight (Cmd+Space) you will need to adjust the Keyboard Shortcut. At the bottom of the list turn off the option for "Previous input" (Cmd+Space), and just leave the "Next source" (Alt+Cmd+Space) checked. Also be sure to check the "Show menu input in menu bar" option at the bottom of the Input Sources box! Then each time you use the key combination it just rotates back to the other language layout and you will see the flag change.

I just tried doing a keyboard switch between English & German from within Parallels. The keyboard shortcut that works in Mac-mode did not work, but it was no problem to right-click on the flag icon and select the other language. The keyboard then functioned as a German keyboard, umlauts and all!

Happy über äußerliche Auswirkungen! It works!!
