This week we are working on a window to search all drives on your computer to find GenoPro files.

If you download GenoPro 2011, you will have the new Find File dialog.  This dialog is available from the File menu or through the shortcut key Ctrl+Shift+F.

This dialog will search all your drives for any GenoPro (*.gno) files.

You can use a neat little utility called Search Everything
http://www.voidtools.com/

This will search all your hard drives and list every file.  You can sort by folder or file name, etc.

Search Everything updates your file list in real time after the initial search.  Of course if you unplug an external  -  because it does update in real time then the files in the externals are not listed (but will be if you plug them in again).  But you can always save any externals list to a text file and can sort before you do.

A right click on any file or folder gives standard Explorer commands - open, delete, open with, run, etc.  You can wild card   *.mp3 for example and it will show all mp3 on all drives you currently have searched.  Double click to play.  Double click on any graphic and it will open in your default file viewer (I use Xnview)  SE can also run exe files by double click.  You can right click on any folder then choose explore path and it will open in internet explorer.

And you can wildcard for GenoPro extension like so - *.gno and SE will find every file with that extention on every hard drive.  Clicking on any gno file will open it with GenoPro.

What SE cannot do is to map networked drives.  However there is a workaround.
http://www.voidtools.com/faq.php

SE takes very little resources and can be kept running all the time.

It also helps to be a little more detailed.  First of all make a subfolder off of your root folder (c: d:, etc.)  Name it something like
c:\genoProfamilytrees

Then for each seperate family tree you make you can make a seperate subfolder for it.  C:\geneProfamilytrees\smith or c:\genoProfamilytrees\jones this will make things considerably easier to find again.
