I can't find how to reduce the thickness of the box line, not the inside box, without reducing the whole thing.  Does anyone know how to do it?  Thanks.

Have not seen that option. You could change the line colour to grey to make it less prominent

Thanks appleshaw, I'll try that but I really wanted a very thin black line.

BTW do you know a way to give the general background a different colour to white?

Just stretch a Label over the whole genomap, delete the default text and select the required colour  and send it to the back (Shift + [ ).
