I like Genopro's easy and intuitive design and many features! It is really incomparable to other programs.

I am using Genopro a lot for families in the Arab world and beyond.

Most people in that region use a name chain that consists of at least three names:

1. first name
2. father's name
3. grandfather's name

4. family name
5. tribal name

In some instances an individual's grandfather's name or the tribe name are used as family name.

For example, Saddam Hussein's full name is as follows:

1. first name: Saddam
2. father's name: `Abd al-Majid
3. grandfather's name: Hussein
4. family name: al-Tikriti

Al-Tikriti is not really a clan name, but a toponymic.

In order to keep the first name separate, I usually write the father's and grandfather's names in the family name's box, in order for the full name chain to appear in the scheme:
1. Saddam
2. `Abd al-Majid Hussein al-Tikriti

But this is not an adequate solution at all.

I wonder, is it possible to add two boxes for the father's and grandfather's names?

(I am not sure though how to code the father's and grandfather's names in gedcom.)

I am faily convinced a feature like this will be a reason for many more people, including scholars, such as anthropologists, all over the world to use and purchase the program!

Which suggestions do other users have in this respect?

Regards,

Robert

You can get very close to what you want by using the First Name and Family Name normally; grandfather as Alternative Name and tribe as Second Last Name (which will display in brackets)
To get this on screen you have to edit the list of Display Names. I could not see an option to put the tribe as last but at least it is in brackets.
Hope the image shows this

Yes, I know, I had thought about that too, but this is a makeshift solution. The fact is that most names in the world do not follow the western system.

I think the solution is to translate and use GenoPro in Arabic, using and naming the fields "Name", "First Name", "Second Name", "Last Name"... according to your culture and needs.
It is not a makeshift solution, but a possible solution. For everyone.
Even for a Finn, an Irish, a Spanish or a Basque.
The language is always a compromise between people who want to chat!

Another option, and one I used for translated names, is to use custom tags.  Create the tags as you see fit, and enter all the names in the appropriate places.  The report will also use the custom tags and have them appear properly.

This is the approach I took:  Use the tag editor (under tools) to create a new dialog - press "new" on the top right button in the Tag Editor.  Call it Arabic Names, or whatever you like...

On the bottom half of the same screen add new tags, each one with the specific name you want to retain.  After pressing OK, go to any individual.  When you open up this person's properties, you will see your new dialog, and a place to put the names you want.  You can also have first name in English followed by first name in Arabic, etc.

If you want the full name to appear on the Genomap, you can combine all of the names into a final tag, and view it, by using the Display menu, go down to the new Arabic Names, select the item you want displayed.

Hope this helps.

Dan,

Is there a way to make the DISPLAY  more dynamic?  By that I mean, instead of a menu item, a small pop-up will appear, and let you determine which items you want to appear, in which order, and on what line.  This way, we can chain any set of attributes, and have the appear on any line.

For example, we can chain Nickname, first name, last name on line 1, date of birth and death on line 2, custom attribute 1 + custom attribute 2 on line 3, etc.
