Hi,
In Sources & Citations I've files in PDF and DOCX format but I can't read them from Narrative Report although path to the files exists and is correct? See attached file ("Error description Citations.doc") where I tried to explain the situation. Any ideas what I should do differently in order to be able to read the files? In GenoPro I'm able to browse these files without any difficulties but get error msg (see attachment) in Narrative Report.
I did try also with latest skin "Narrative 2011.07.23", but no help. Still the same error occurs.

The Narrative report is generating a "web site" that run a browser.
For security reason, the browser can't read file on your computer.

Presumably, ie I have not tried this, you could create folders on the web site having the same relative positions on your computer. Use GenoPro's ftp program to put your documents there and make sure that the links are relative, not direct to the source. Disadvantage is that the sources are out on the web, not on your PC. I think GenoPro terms of use of the web server will allow this.

Hello
Thank for you kind and clear advises. Could you please tell me, how are you documenting information that is in PDF format and telling something important about the object it is attached to. Eg. I've got written documents, even 100 pages (A4) long, telling about a person's life. These kind of, CV's if you like, files are very descriptive and telling a lot of person life. How do you handle this kind of information and possibly circumvent that they are not copied as pictures are? BR, Jarmo

I think the answer to protection, ie stop copying, is that this can never be effective. You might be able to restrict access but if you can view text on the screen it can always be saved as an image and OCRed. My thinking is that if you put something on a web site it is published. You can put a copyright on it but this does not stop people copying

There is a little 'trick' you could try to get files referenced in your Sources 'Source Fle or URL' fields copied to the report area and be accessible.
Create a folder called 'pictures' below your folder that contains your .gno file. Place your PDFs etc. in this pictures folder.
Make sure a relative URL path is given in 'Source File or URL' field e.g. pictures/document.pdf (note forward slash)
Then in GenoPro add this same file, e.g. picture\document.pdf as a 'picture' to the Source. GenoPro will not display this 'picture' but will keep its name and copy it to the 'pictures' folder of the report when a report is generated. The Narrative Report will not show it as a picture either but it will be linked in the Source details.
If you want you can change the name of the folder from 'pictures' to say 'media' but then you must also change the _PathPictures attribute in the Parameters tag of Config.xml to 'media' as well.

Thanks again for your good advise. Unfortunately I did not succeed to make Ron's 'trick' to work he advised.
Maybe, "applesaw" was right that it is not wise to try to achieve the goal I have in mind ie. to make these files accessible from Narrative Report. Perhaps these files should be protected from possible violations like copying, saving as an image, OCRed or whatever. On the other hand when people have given these files to me they have known that files are open "for all eyes" ie. they are public when published. I find these text files very important and interesting for everybody wanting to know more than it is possible to save in the standard fields of a person, marriage or other objects. Could somebody please tell me, how are you documenting information that is in eg. PDF format and telling something important about the object it is attached to and "cannot" be saved in std fields?Best wishes, Jarmo
