 Problem:

Running Narrative Update\” (NarrativeReport) {EN} returns the following error that I have been unable to fix:

[35.23] Unableto read file '..\..\07-1 Genealogy\Pictures\sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp'.

Filenot found.  The file cannot be found inthe specified folder

Situation:

  1. Thispicture, sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp, is referenced within 10 individualrecords included in GenoMap1 of a .GED tree.

  2. TheNarrative Report {EN} displays the referenced picture within all ten individualreports of the individuals referenced.

Corrective Action Tried:

  1. CheckedTable Layout list of pictures and found all pictures in the table and found all600+ pictures were recognized and linked.

  2. Checkedpicture names in all 10 referenced individual records and found nodiscrepancies.

  3. Checkedpicture names in both the Table Layout list and the actual picture names containedin the reference folder and found no discrepancies.

Question:

Since there is apparently no actual error, how do I usethe number “[35.23] to get rid of this error indicator?

A space in the file name is your problem. Replace it with an underscore. Although windows accept spaces in file names, web servers will not and only see left of the space as a file name.

I do not believe that a space in the filename is causing the error.  The error occurs whilst generating the report, not whilst accessing the generated report so no web server is involved.

I note the this image is accessed via a 'relative path' (it starts with ..\..\) which may no longer be correct.   It is worth checking for this relative path in GenoPro's Table Layout / Pictures Menu entry.  Click the Relative Path column heading to sort in this order and then look in the column for this particular relative path and then check that the adjacent Path column is correct.  The references column will show in which objects it is referenced.

The error message cannot be supressed and the number [35.23] is merely the time GenoPro has been running the report generation. The cause must be found and eliminated.

Note that .bmp images are considerably larger than compressed .jpg images. I recommend that you convert your images to .jpg format using for example the IrfanView utility.

You are correct in that inserting the _ into the picture name would not solve the problem.

Inserting the _ caused the following error message:

[5.43] Unableto load image '..\..\07-1 Genealogy\Pictures\sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp'(File not found.  The file cannot befound in the specified folder)

I again double checked the picture name in the relative path and path columns of the table layout and the names are the same.  After running the report again the following message was still being received:

[49.45]

Unable to read file '..\..\07-1 Genealogy\Pictures\sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp'.

File not found. The file cannot be found in the specified folder

My personal feeling is that somehow while moving my .GED file from an old computer to my present computer coupled with renaming the file in question, somewhere in the .GED file a copy of the original name "sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp" is hiding and still being referenced.  The file current name is "sheppard-charles ray-family 2007.bmp".

To the best of my knowledge, the error is not affecting the accuracy of the report since the picture is picked up and appears every time it is included under individuals.  Actually, the picture shows 12 individuals and the picture shows up in all 12 places in the report.

I really appreciate your help and while it would be nice to eliminate the trouble message, at this point eliminating the message is not critical.

Thanks again.

So you have renamed the actual file to sheppard-charles ray-family 2007.bmp.  Therefore all you need do is search either the Relative Path or Path column in Table Layout / Pictures to find sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp i.e. the original filename, select it (i.e. left click) then right click to obtain context menu and chose 'Delete Picture'.  This of only deletes the reference from GenoPro and no attempt will be made to delete the actual file.

I previously searched the table relative path and path columns with negative results.  At any rate, based on your comment the table was searched again and the report re-ran and received the following results:

7.25] Unable to load image '..\..\07-1 Genealogy\Pictures\sheppard-charles ray-family 2007.bmp' (File not found. The file cannot be found in the specified folder)

NOTE:  Since first receiving the above error message, none of my searches for the file in the table layout have found the offending file.

Thanks again for your interest in my problem.

Now I am confused as to what is going on.  My understanding is:

You had a picture on your old computer named

You moved your files to a new computer and renamed the file to sheppard-charles ray-family 2007.bmp but the original name was still referenced in your .ged and GenoPro complained when it could not find sheppard-charles ray-family.bmp

But in your latest post you say the missing file is now sheppard-charles ray-family 2007.bmp i.e. the name that it was renamed to.

Obviously GenoPro is not making up these names at random and so somewhere in your file the missing file path (which ever one it is now) is present.  There are only two places where an external file path is held within GenoPro, that either as a Path of a Picture or in the URL field of a Source/Citation.  The Narrative Report skin does not access the latter and so it must be a Picture Path.

Ideally for each actual photo there should only be one Picture object within GenoPro and all other objects (Individuals, Families, Places etc) that reference that photo should refer to it via the single Picture Object.  When you load a normal .ged file into GenoPro it will create a single Picture object for all references to the same photo.  If your .ged was produced using GenoPro's own built-in Export to Gedcom then it will not be a standard Gedcom file but one in GenoPro's proprietary format and Picture objects get created as they were at the time of the Export.

You state that the photo appears in all places where it should be in the report.  It may be, but unlikely, a 'stray' picture object i.e. one that is not referenced from any other object.  GenoPro has a menu command to remove stray objects see Table Layout/Delete/Delete Stray Objects.  You could try this and then re-run he report to see if the error disappears.

Alternatively I am happy to take a look at your .ged file so if you are happy with that then send it to me (genome) privately either by attaching it to a Private Message (PM) from this forum or using GenoPro's in-built-in File/Send menu item.  Note that in either case no photos will be sent, only the text in the .ged file.
